Missoula Hellgate Dominates 2018 Montana High School States

Missoula Hellgate High School swept the 2018 Montana High School AA swimming and diving state championships. The boys scored 304 points to win while the girls totaled 359. Bozeman was second on both sides with 143 points for the boys and 212 for the girls.

Boys

The Hellgate team won the 200 medley relay by four seconds, touching in 1:36.21. Hellgate senior Darragh Mahns won a tight 200 freestyle in 1:42.57. His junior teammate Sawyer Keyes was third (1:43.88) and Central junior Jack Leuthold touched second (1:42.81). Leuthold won the 500 free in a state record time of 4:39.90. Keyes was runner up in 4:41.44.

Hellgate went one-two in the 200 IM with Matthew Fritz (1:56.63) and Tanner Baldry (2:00.80). Fritz (52.65) and teammate Simon McMahon (54.39) earned gold an silver in the 100 backstroke.

Flathead’s Jamie Bouda won the 50 free in a state record time of 20.49. Hellgate’s Mahns (21.56) and Finnian Westenfelder (22.15) were second and third. Bouda also won the 100 breaststroke with his 56.08. Bozeman’s Nathan Peters was also under a minute (57.97).

Another Hellgate win came in the 100 fly when Lyndon Amon won the event in 52.52, just out touching Helena’s Robert Wagner in 52.67. Westenfelder and Amon took the top two spots in the 100 free in 48.68 and 49.13, respectively.

In the 200 freestyle relay Hellgate turned in another state record time, a 1:26.52. They wrapped up the meet in winning fashion with a 3:17.61 400 freestyle relay.

Girls

Hellgate won the 200 medley relay in 1:46.35. Hellgate got a win and a state record from senior Mari Aoki in the 200 IM, when she touched in 2:05.83. Aoki also won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.56).

Butte Bulldogs sophomore Catherine Russo touched in 22.76 to set a state record in the 50 free. She set another state mark in the 100 fly with her time of 54.15.

The records kept rolling into the 100 freestyle where Katharine Berkoff, a junior at Hellgate, touched in 50.01 for first. The Hellgate team (names were not available) took down the state mark in the 200 free relay with a 1:38.54. Berkoff kept rolling, clocking an impressive state record of 52.80 to win the 100 backstroke. Junior teammate Aidan Condit was the only other swimmer under a minute, finishing in 58.33.

Glacier junior AJ Popp won the 200 free with a 1:52.89, winning by five seconds. Hellgate’s Jesse Ecklund touched second in 1:57.51. Popp was second (52.62) in the 100 free. Bozeman freshman Sara Guillen swam a 5:18.42 to win the 500 free.

In 3:35.93 Hellgate ended the meet with another win, touching first in the 400 free relay by over 7 seconds.
