Mission Viejo Nadadores Pool Redesign Plan To Be Questioned By Mayor In Meeting

Next year’s planned redesign of the Marguerite Aquatics Complex, the longtime home of the Mission Viejo Nadadores, was all but decided until the team received word that Mission Viejo Mayor Cathy Schlicht had concerns about the process to renovate the pool.

According to a post on the Nadadores’ Facebook page, Schlicht is expected to “call into question the bid process and move to recall the vote to renovate the Aquatics Complex” at tonight’s City Council meeting. If the previous vote that approved the renovation is rescinded, the Nadadores would have to start again with another contractor submitting a proposal for renovation.

The Mission Viejo City Council voted 4-1 to renovate the aging facility on June 1 at a price of $6.4 million, with the team responsible for $1.3 million of that. Schlicht was the dissenting vote on June 1, according to the meeting minutes, saying the hefty price tag was too much for residents to pay.

The renovation was expected to begin in fall 2016, after the Rio Olympics, but if last month’s approval is yanked, it “would significantly delay the renovation and increase costs,” according to the Nadadores’ Facebook post. The renovation would take care of the 50-meter competition pool, teaching pool and diving tower. Scores of Olympians have trained in the facility, including Greg Louganis, Brian Goodell, Cynthia Woodhead and Chloe Sutton.

The City Council meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, 200 Civic Center.

Yeah because the pool in Mission Viejo hasn’t brought in millions in sales tax revenue or anything to Mission Viejo in the last 40 years.

The entitlement mentality abounds in this swim club !! Why should all of the citizens of Mission Viejo pay for the exclusive use of these elitist club Mets–who exclude the public from pool use.???

I’m betting that the mayor’s concerns about the bid process is that the mayor’s friends and supporters aren’t getting a big enough piece of the action.
