Mirna Jukic’s 200 Breast European Record Comes in Short Pool

SCHWECHAT, Austria, July 31. JUST a week after Austrian Mirna Jukic thought she broke the European record in the women's 200 breast at the Austrian Championships, word comes out that she did so in a short pool.

Word out of Austria is that the pool was found to measure at 49.96, four centimeters short of the 50-meter mark. Therefore, her short-lived European record of 2:23.90 will not stand.

Jukic is taking the news fairly well, however.

"What should I do? This is not a tragedy for me," Jukic said in a loose translation. "I will have to break the European record here in China once I swim."

This is the second time this summer that a short pool issue has caused some consternation within the swimming community. In May, a Texas Senior Circuit meet held in College Station also had a short pool.

Let's hope that the powers that be are all over measuring the Water Cube at every opportunity at the 2008 Beijing Games!
