North Dakota Press Release

Host Minnesota claimed wins over North Dakota Friday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center as the Gopher men won, 207-89 and the sixth-ranked women defeated UND, 215-81.

“A loss is always difficult, but our team showed guts in racing one of the best programs in the country,” UND head swimming and diving coach Chris Maiello said. “If we want to reach our goals as a program we need to race teams of this caliber and be competitive with them. I thought we took a step forward towards that tonight. I am proud of the work the team has put in over the past week as we work toward our mid-season goals.

Noah Lucas went 46.41 in the 100 free for a runner-up finish. He had another second-place showing in the 200 free (1:41.02) and had the third-fastest time in the 500 free (4:43.24). Martin Pozniak won the 100 butterfly, touching in 50.85.

Clayton Metcalf’s sixth-place finishes in both diving events led UND. He scored 270.08 from the short board and 286.80 from the 3-meter board.

“With solid swims all around it is hard to single any one out, but Pozniak’s 100 fly victory was pretty impressive,” Maiello said. “Clayton Metcalf also had a nice night on the boards as well; he has had a few good weeks and has a lot of momentum right now. He is fun to watch.

“For the women, Grace DiMeo had a season best in the 1000 and Alexa Weyer had a great race in the 100 breaststroke, just getting touched out. Our ladies were tough all night,” Maiello said.

That season-best for DiMeo was a 10:52.55 effort, good for fifth place. Weyer was just beat at the wall in that 100 breast race, clocking 1:06.22 less than a half-second off the pace. Teammate Steph Frey was just over a second behind her for third place.

Jennifer Anklan was the top UND diver, finishing fourth from both boards with Sawyer Murray grabbing fifth in both events.

North Dakota women will head to Iowa State Friday to swim against the host Cyclones and Omaha then travel to the University of Kansas to compete with the Jayhawks and TCU. The UND men join the ladies Saturday in Lawrence, Kan. for a dual with the Horned Frogs.
