Minnesota Diving Signs Two of Minnesota’s Best To National Letters of Intent

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, November 16. UNIVERSITY of Minnesota head diving coach Wenbo Chen announced today that Turner Eckstrom (Red Wing, Minn.) and Andres Hansen (Minnetonka, Minn.) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend the University of Minnesota.

Eckstrom, a senior at Red Wing High School, has won the last two Minnesota State Class A state diving titles. He won the 2008 title as a sophomore with a finals score of 460.75 and the 2009 crown as a junior with a tally of 430.40. Eckstrom is qualified for the 2009 AT&T National Diving Championship this past summer, where he finished 23rd on the 1-meter springboard. He also competed at the 2009 Speedo Junior Nationals, finishing 21st on the 1-meter. He made a strong showing at the 2009 USA Diving Age Group Championships, finishing eighth on the 3-meter.

"Turner is a very strong and competitive diver," Chen said. "I think he can help the team to score at the Big Ten Championships in his freshman year. He chose Minnesota over some big-time diving school such as Alabama to sign with is. I am so glad that he chose Minnesota and look forward to working with him."

Hansen, a senior at Minnetonka High School, is a two-time Minnesota State finalist. He placed fifth at the Minnesota State Class AA meet in 2009 and seventh in 2008. He competed at the 2009 USA Diving Age Group Championships, highlighted by a 14th place showing on the 10-meter platform.

"Andres has not been diving for that long but he has come a long way in a short amount of time," Chen said. "He is talented diver and I believe that he will be a great surprise."
