Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championships, Day Three

OMAHA, Nebraska, February 18. THE UNO swimming and diving team moved into second place at the 2011 Midwestern Collegiate Championships on Friday night, grabbing four event wins at the HPER Swimming Pool on the UNO campus. After day three of the conference meet, the Mavericks have a total of 755 points, behind only St. Cloud State (836.5) and ahead of Minnesota State (679.5), Colorado Swim Club (293), College of Saint Mary (196) and Morningside College (180).

Senior Laura Kemp won her second individual event of the week, taking the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:32.11. Kemp was also part of the Mavericks' winning 800-yard freestyle relay team – along with juniors Amy Bechdolt and Kylie Hubbell and senior Cait Hopkins – bringing in a mark of 7:42.89.

Hopkins earned top honors in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.80), followed by Hubbell in second (1:56.02) and senior Lucy Zamecnik in fifth (1:57.79). Joining Kemp in the 400 IM finals were sophomore Chelsea Hartman in fifth (4:47.82) and sophomore Mattie Fosbender in sixth (4:51.77).

Freshman Kylie Rathbone led the way in the 100-yard breaststroke with a winning time of 1:04.17), backed by freshman Maddie Hutt in third (1:05.87) and Hartman in sixth (1:07.68).

Bechdolt, Kemp, Rathbone and junior Colleen Klaiber and garnered a runner-up performance in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:46.61). Klaiber also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.61), and sophomore Cami Hansberry took fifth (59.76).

In the 100-yard backstroke competition, Hansberry placed third (59.49), and junior Ariel Lahowetz added a sixth-place showing in 1:00.79.

In diving action, which took place in Mankato, Minn., junior Amanda Schulte finished fifth in the one-meter event with a score of 372.15.

Saturday marks the final day of competition at the 2011 Midwestern Collegiate Championships, with the preliminary session set for 10 a.m. and finals slated for 6 p.m. at HPER Pool.
