Middle Tyger YMCA Wins YMCA Nationals; More National Records and Olympic Trial Cuts

On the final night of the YMCA National Championships, three Individual National Records were broken as Middle Tyger YMCA won the women’s and the national combined title while Wilton YMCA won the men’s title.  Below is a recap and splits of the final night of racing.

Women’s 200 Butterfly: Kate May from Edwardsville, Illinois dropped below 2:17.20 winning the national title by over 2 seconds.  Meredith Whisenhunt out touched Meghan Joram for second place. Fourteen year old, Katherine Connolly from South Shore, MA had a nice swim with the fastest freestyle split of 35.37 placing fifth with a 2:19.53.

Men’s 200 Butterfly: David May set a YMCA National record with a 2:02.33, just missing an Olympic Trial cut.  At 15, he has lots of room for improvement, especially on his third 50 split. May was the youngest in the field.

Women 100 Freestyle: New YMCA National Record and Olympic Trial cut once again by Katrina Konopka with a 56.01.  The 18 year-old tore up the field with a get-out split of 26.91. She came home with a 29.14 to top the medal stand.  Leila Johnston and Sophie Fontaine tied for 5th with a time of 58.36.

Men 100 Freestyle: Mark Andrew and Zach Apple battled it out with Apple leading after the first 50 by .14 and Andrew overtaking him on the last 50 to win by .47 with a time of 50.96

Women 200 IM: 18 year-old Maggie Werba took the lead after the breaststroke leg and never looked back as she won the national title with a 2:19.60.

Women’s 50 Backstroke: 16 year old Camryn Forbes from Butler, PA won the sprint backstroke with a time of 29.41 while Nate Samson won it for the men in a time of 27.00

In one of the more exciting races of the night, Robby Giller set a new YMCA National Record in the 800 Freestyle by dropping over 14 seconds to post a record time of 8:21.91. Karl Bishop pulled up next to Giller with 250 meters to go and they both went stroke for stroke into the wall.
