IOWA CITY – The Michigan Wolverines put up a pretty strong day to enter Friday with a big lead at the Big Ten Men’s Championships.

Wisconsin’s Matt Hutchins upset Michigan’s Anders Nielsen in the 500-yard free with a close, 4:14.00 to 4:14.06, victory in the event.  Both swimmers cleared Connor Jaeger’s pool record of 4:14.84, but Nielsen was a shoo-in to win until Hutchins turned the tables on him with a strong second-to-last 100.

Northwestern’s Jordan Wilimovsky finished third in 4:14.70 with Indiana’s Jackson Miller a clear fourth-place finisher with a 4:16.09.

Michigan’s Dylan Bosch took down the pool record in the 200-yard IM with a 1:41.93 for an NCAA A cut.  The swim also put him within striking distance of Kyle Whitaker’s Big Ten record of 1:41.14 from last year.

Michigan’s Evan White wook second in 1:43.24 with Purdue’s Guillermo Blanco snagging third overall in 1:43.87.

Michigan went 1-2-4 in the 50-yard free to keep piling on the points.  Paul Powers won as a freshman with a 19.30, while Bruno Ortiz placed second in 19.48.  Vinny Tafuto finished fourth for Michigan with a 19.62, while Penn State’s Shane Ryan earned third in 19.49.

During the diving break, reigning NCAA champion Michael Hixon put on a show in the one-meter competition with a Big Ten record 474.45 points for the victory.  Purdue’s Steele Johnson placed second with 415.85 points, while Ohio State’s Stephen Ettienne took third with 399.15 points.
