Michigan Men’s Swimming Sweeps Penn State Tri-Meet, Women Split

UNIVERSITY PARK – The University of Michigan men’s swimming and diving team swept both of their dual meets Saturday afternoon against Virginia and Penn State as the Penn State tri-meet came to a close.

The Wolverine men topped Penn State (212.5-140.5) and Virginia (247-102), while Penn State bested Virginia (212-136). On the women’s side, Virginia beat Michigan (184.5-168.5) and Michigan topped Penn State by just three points (178-175). Penn State beat Virginia (183-170) to give each school a win and a loss at the meet.

Michigan’s quartet of Aaron Whitaker, Bruno Ortiz, Dylan Bosch and Paul Powers started day two off with a win in the 200 medley relay as they touched in 1:28.03 to top Penn State’s 1:29.08. Anders Nielsen followed that up with a win in the 1000 free in 9:11.31, comfortably ahead of teammate PJ Ransford (9:19.40).

Penn State claimed the next two events, as Shane Ryan touched first in the 50 free in 20.33 and Nate Savoy topped the 100 back in 47.87. Ryan returned two events later to win the 100 fly in 49.21, just edging Michigan’s Vinny Tafuto (49.30) for his third individual win of the meet. Matthew Stasiunas added a win in the 200 free in 1:39.63 for the Nittany Lions.

The Wolverines also got a win from freshman Ian Rainey in the 400 IM (3:58.74), the final individual race of the meet. Virginia’s Yannick Kaeser (200 breast, 2:00.83) and JB Kolod (3-meter diving) gave the Cavalier men two wins on the day.

Michigan closed out the meet with a win in the 400 free relay behind strong efforts from Justin Glanda, Anders Nielsen, Paul Powers and Bruno Ortiz (2:57.05).

Penn State won today’s opening women’s 200 medley relay, as Allie Pennetti, Kaitlin Saloky, Carolyn Fittin and Alyson Ackman touched in 1:41.48, three tenths in front of Virginia (1:41.78).

The Nittany Lion women kept the ball rolling in the next two events, as Megan Siverling raced to a win in the 1000 free (9:48.52), just in front of Michigan’s Hannah Moore (9:48.89). Then, Carolyn Fittin got the better of Michigan’s Ali DeLoof in the 50 free by only .02, 23.21 to 23.23.

Virginia’s Courtney Bartholomew swam away with her third title of the meet, posting a 53.30 in the 100 back. That’s just off her season best of 53.08. Laura Simon gave the Virginia women a second-straight win, sweeping the breaststroke events at the meet with a 2:15.38 in the 200 today. Ellen Williamson made it three in a row for the Cavaliers, topping the 100 fly in 54.19.

Penn State’s Alyson Ackman (200 free, 1:47.93) and Michigan’s Marni Oldershaw (400 IM, 4:21.65) won the two remaining individual swimming events, while Michigan’s Cary Chen topped the 1-meter diving competition with 297.45 points.

Penn State’s Alyson Ackman, Kaitlin Saloky, Kaitlin Jones and Carolyn Fittin swam a 3:20.44 to win the 400 free relay, .42 in front of Michigan.
