Michael Phelps Tops 200 Fly Field in Day 3 Prelims of the 2015 AT&T Winter National Championships

The third and final day of the 2015 AT&T Winter National Championships saw a myriad of fast swims.

Michael Phelps topped the competition in the men’s 200 fly with a sizzling 1:58.07. Phelps’ fastest time in the event for 2015 is a 1:52.94 from the USA Summer Nationals in San Antonio. Teammate Chase Kalisz posted the second fastest time of the morning with a 1:58.69, while Sebastien Rousseau rounded out the top three with a 1:58.94.

Hilary Caldwell posted the top time of the morning in the women’s 200 back with a 2:11.00. Elizabeth Beisel turned in a time of 2:11.39 to return tonight as the second-place seed, and Maya Dirado clocked a 2:11.57 to finish third in prelims.

The men’s 200 back will be an action packed event tonight with Patrick Mulcare returning as the top seed with a 1:58.25. Arkady Vyatchanin finished second overall in prelims with a time of 1:59.20, while Matt Grevers was third with a 2:00.05.

Lia Neal dashed to first in the women’s 100 free with a 54.27. Abbey Weitzeil finished second in prelims with a time of 54.71, while Simone Manuel will return as the third place seed with a 54.92.

Santo Condorelli turned on the heat during the men’s 100 free posting the top time at a 48.80. Josh Schneider returns as the second-place seed with a 49.10, and Yuri Kisil was third overall in prelims with a 49.21.

Kierra Smith cranked out a swift 2:25.55 in the women’s 200 breaststroke to earn the top seed for tonight’s finals. Miranda Tucker finished with a time of 2:26.82 to return as the second-place seed, while Lilly King took third in prelims with a 2:27.01.

Carlos Claverie finished first in prelims of the men’s 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12.45. Sam Tierney clocked a 2:13.13 to earn the second-place seed, while Brendan McHugh returns as a close third-place seed with a 2:13.41.

Taylor Pike and Andreina Pinto turned in similar times from heats seven and six respectively. Pike will return as the top seed with a 2:10.70, while Pinto stopped the clock at 2:10.86. Hannah Saiz rounded out the top three with a 2:11.19.
