Race Video: Michael Andrew Sets NAG Record On Day 2 of AESC Elite Pro-Am

Just a weekend after his dominant showing at the Speedo Winter Jr. National Championships, Michael Andrew was up to his old tricks on night two of the 2015 Oklahoma Elite Pro-Am. The 16-year-old lowered his National Age Group record in the 100-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 51.75.

The evening started with the women’s 200-yard freestyle. Lindsay Vrooman of Badger Swim Club won the race in 1:46.08, over two seconds ahead of the second place finisher. In the men’s event, New York Aquatic Club’s Darian Townsend brought home the win in 1:34.09.

Olympic Gold Medalist Breeja Larson won the women’s 100-yard breaststroke. Larson posted a time of 58.74 to win by over five seconds. Badger Swim Club’s Cody Miller took the men’s event in 50.82, just ahead of Andrew.

Taylor Pike of Razorback Aquatic Club was victorious in the women’s 100-yard butterfly. The 16-year-old posted a time of 53.78. Club Wolverine’s Miguel Ortiz took the victory in the men’s event, touching the wall in 45.19.

Luciana Thomas of Razorback Aquatic Club earned the win in the women’s 400-yard individual medley. Thomas beat out Pike, her teammate, with a time of 4:18.95. Olympic Gold Medalist Darian Townsend earned the men’s victory with a time of 3:55.76. Townsend represents New York Aquatic Club.

The evening concluded with the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay. Razorback Aquatic Club won the women’s event in 3:29.58. The team consisted of Martina Thomas, Hayley Pike, Luciana Thomas and Taylor Pike.

American Energy Swim Club took first place in the men’s event. The team of Jonathan Ye, Luke Davis, Josh Davis and Joseph Short posted a time of 3:09.65. Northwest Arkansas Aquatics touched second.

Going into day three, American Energy Swim Club is leading the event on the men’s side with 259 points. Razorback Aquatic Club is in second with 161 points and Northwest Arkansas Aquatics is in third with 149.

Razorback Aquatic Club leads all women’s teams with 340 points. Charger Aquatics is in second with 217 points and Splash Club is in third with 191.

I agree! This kid is not going to be content with just setting an NAG record every week or two, but really wants to make the ’16 Olympic team and not have to wait until ’20! And I’d say the 100 Breast may be his best opportunity!

Sure looks like he has a shot — albeit a rather long one.

Better odds of making Reece Whitley hang ’em up early.

And is Darian Townsend in the Social Security age- group yet? He’s been around longer than Phelps and Lochte combined.

.51.7 100 yard breaststroke at 16 years of age. I was excited to go .53 100 yard freestyle front crawl at 16. That kid is a phenomenal athlete. Wow!
