Swimming in the preliminaries of the long course Region VIII sectionals in Columbia, Mo., Michael Andrew lowered his own U.S. national age group record in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:01.21.

That beats his mark of 1:01.67 in the 15-16 age group from the Austin stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series this past January, and ranks him in a tie with Josh Prenot for the eighth-fastest time by an American so far in 2015.

Look for Andrew to move up the domestic rankings in tonight’s final.

Andrew became the youngest American to become a professional swimmer when he made the announcement two years ago at the age of 14. He has since won junior national titles and set numerous national age group records in the 13-14 age group. The long course 100 breast is the only NAG record he owns in the 15-16 age group, though he is about a month into his 16th year.

Comparative splits
January 2015: 29.29, 32.38
July 2015: 28.89, 32.32

Michael Andrew has opted to represent South Africa internationally and as such cannot hold or break a U.S. NAG record. This situation first arose more than 30 years ago when Brazil’s Ricardo Prado was training @ Mission Viejo and broke several 17-18 NAG records.

When this was pointed out to the then-U.S. Swimming NAG records chairwoman she consulted with USS officials in Colorado Springs and the determination was made that only U.S. citizens can hold U.S. NAG records.

No provision was made for the designation “U.S. Open NAG record.”

I don’t think Michael has decided to swim for South Africa. The most recent interview he gave, he very specifically said he will compete for the United States. This was less than a month ago. Has something changed? I sure hope not. He is a huge asset to USA Swimming. Regardless of whether or not he makes the USA Olympic team for Rio 2016, he has a very bright future ahead him. I wish him nothing but the best.

I hope he does swim for South Africa, to fully teach his potential in all events at the biggest stage that is not a difficult decision.
