Miami-Ohio, Notre Dame vs. Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio, November 15. THE Cleveland State University men's swim team hosted a double dual meet on Nov. 15. The Vikings welcomed Miami (Ohio) and Notre Dame to the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium, improving to 7-2 with the split. CSU knocked off Miami 135-102 and fell to Notre Dame 132-109.

The Vikings had winners in six events, including three by Mark deSwardt, and recorded new season-best times in nine events.

"We had a terrific day of racing," head coach Wally Morton said. "We were solid against Miami and on paper it could have gone either way. If we take into account just the dual with Miami, we won all but the diving events. Notre Dame is one of the top programs in the nation and we outscored them in the swimming events. Every single person contributed to our success today. This was one of the best dual meet performances we've had in the history of the school."

CSU opened the day with a win in the 400 medley relay in season-best time (3:25.33). Todd Winchell swam the leadoff leg for the Vikings, followed by Marko Milenkovic and Stephen Grove while Nedim Nisic anchored the race.

deSwardt kept pace with the first of his three wins, swimming a 9:24.64 to win the 1,000 freestyle. He also picked up a win in the 200 butterfly (1:51.38) to record a season-best time and the ninth-fastest time in CSU history. That was followed up by a victory in the 500 freestyle (4:33.92). deSwardt's 500 freestyle time was the eighth-fastest time in school history and another new season best for CSU.

Milenkovic also had a solid outing for the Vikings, recording a season-best time and a victory in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.36). He edged out teammate Deni Gasparin (2:06.76) in the event to record a better time than he swam at last year's Horizon League Championship. Milenkovic also finished second in the 200 IM (1:57.07).

CSU's final win came in the 400 freestyle relay with Jakub Dobies, Nisic, Keith Everhart and Mike Marsico finishing in a season-best time of 3:07.36.

Several other Vikings swimmers recorded the team's top times of the season, including Grove, Dobies and Zvonimir Androic. Grove finished second in the 50 freestyle (20.94) while Dobies swam new top times in the 100 free (45.89, 2nd) and the 200 freestyle (1:43.77, 3rd). CSU's other new top time of the season went to Zvonimir Androic who took second in the 200 backstroke (1:53.93).

Colin Hanner also notched a Top-3 finish for the Vikings in the 200 backstroke (1:54.10, 3rd).

The team has an off week before returning to action on Tuesday, Nov. 25 when it hosts Ohio State in the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
