Mia Rankin Posts 400 IM Personal Best at Day 2 of Mt. Hood Speedo Sectionals

The Mt. Hood Speedo Sectionals meet continued Friday with four simple individual events: the men’s and women’s 200 free and 400 IM. Scottsdale Aquatic Club continued to grow their lead in the team scores, bypassing the 1,000 mark with a total of 1,069.5 points, while Boise YMCA rose above Phoenix Swim Club to take second with 758 over PSC’s 638.

Women’s 200 Free

15-year-olds reigned supreme in the finals of the women’s 200 free as Ashley Strouse of Scottsdale Aquatic Club and Kathryn Shalney of Foothills Swim Team posted the top two times of the night. Strouse claimed the gold medal with a strong finish of 2:02.37, while Shanley took second with a 2:05.18

Shanley was followed closely to the wall by Tualatin Hills Swim Club’s Ryan Falk, who stopped the clock at a final time of 2:05.20.

Men’s 200 Free

Isaac Stump, representing Tucson Ford Aquatics, added another 200 victory to his name, this time in freestyle. Stump scraped .66 seconds off his prelims time of 1:51.90 to finish first overall with a 1:51.24.

Hugo Sykes of University of Denver Hilltoppe picked up the silver medal with a 1:52.97, followed closely by Wasatch Front Fish Market’s Lucas Hess and his time of 1:53.06.

Women’s 400 IM

14-year-old Mia Rankin of Phoenix Swim Club bested a field of fellow teenagers in finals of the women’s 400 IM. Rankin slashed a whopping 6.39 seconds off her prelims time of 5:01.89 to win the event with a personal best time of 4:55.50.

Flatiron Athletic Club’s Amelie Lessing turned in a 4:57.80 for second place, followed by Rankin’s teammate Sydney Carlson and her time of 4:58.51.

Men’s 400 IM

The big time drops continued as the top three finishers in the men’s 400 IM each scraped more than six seconds off their prelims time. Hiromasa Fujimori led the charge, dominating the men’s final with a time of 4:23.04.

Mesa Aquatic Club’s Kevin Keil delivered a second place finish of 4:31.89, while Boise YMCA’s Jackson Cunningham took third with a 4:35.02.
