Men’s NCAA Water Polo: Stanford Dumps Cal, 8-4

BERKELEY, CA., Oct. 6. TONY Azevado just keeps rolling along — and so does the top-ranked Stanford men's water polo team.

The stellar Cardinal red-shirt freshman, a member of Uncle Sam's Olympic team last year at Sydney, rifled home a trio of goals to help lead Stanford to an 8-4 victory over previously undefeated Cal here this afternoon.

The match was held at the Golden Bears' Spieker Aquatics Complex.

The match was a non-conference affair, however, so both teams remain undefeated in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.

Stanford is now 5-zip while Cal falls to 4-1.

Stanford shot out to a 2-0 first quarter lead and was never threatened. The Cardinal led at halftime, 5-1 and the outcome was inevitable.

Card Nick Ellis hada pair of saves and teammates Parsi Dutton and Jeff Nesmeth each scored a pair of goals.

Stanford next hosts Loyola-Marymount this Friday and then is host for the NorCal Invitational next weekend.
