Men’s NCAA Div. I: Michigan Takes A Slim Lead Over Minnesota After Day 2 of Big-10 Champs

ANN ARBOR, Mich., February 28. THERE'S no place like home for the Wolverines.

Coach Jon Urbancek's Michigan men's swimming and diving team, hoping to stop a Minnesota threepeat for the Big 10 title here this weekend at Canham Natatoriun, moved into the lead after Day 2 with an 11.5-point advantage over Coach Dennis Dale's Giolden Gophers — 473.5 – 462.

Indiana continues its climb back up the ladder of success and remains third (309.50). Next comes Northwestern (252) closely follwed by Wisconsin (248), Penn State is next (226.50).

The Wolverines won one individual and one relay event, with sophomiore Chuck Sayao splashing to a pr and NCAA auto cut in the 400 IM via his 3:46.50, among the top half-dozen times so far this season.

His old pr was a 3:49.26 from the prelims of last year's NCAAs, where he finished sixth in the consolation finals. A member of Canada's national team, Sayao said before the race that he wanted this year's Big 10s to be his "coming out" meet and his gold is certainly reflective of that.

Michigan also scored a bronze when sophomore Brendan Nelligan went a consideration 3:49.20 for third. Minnesota junior Ryan Plummer (3:48.29) was second for the Gophers, who also scored a fourth- and fifth-place finish.

The Gophers opened tonight's races with a Big 10 meet-record in the 200 medley relay, its 1:26.23 "A" cut, not far off the all-time Big 10 record 1:25.87 from last season's NCAAs by Minnesota, The Gophers were without the services of 50 free champ Terry Silkaitis, who swam (and won) the 200 free in an "A" 1:34.42, then led off Minnesota's runner-up 800 free relay in 1:36.01, fasest split of the race.

Penn State senior Eugene Botes retained his 100 fly title with a 47.40 win after going a season-best 47.08 in the prelims, just off his pr and Big 10 meet record 47.01 from the heats of last year's Championships at Bloomington, The NCAA "A" cut is 47.34.

Although the Wolverines didn't win the 200 free, that honor going to the Gophers' Silkaitis (pr and Minnesota-record 1:34.42), Michigan cleaned house in this race with defending champ Dan Ketchum second (1:34.88); teammate Garrett Mangieri third (1:36.26) and another pair of Wolverines taking fifth and sixth.

Minnesota won the final two individual races as senior Jeff Hackler touched first in the 100 breast (auto-cut 53.67, .01 off his meet record from last year); and senior Todd Smolinski winning the 100 back (NCAA "A" cut 47.28).

Purdue junior Tamas Bessenyei, a Hungarian national team member, was runner-up in the breaststroke with a pr 53.99 and Michigan's Jeff Hopwood won the bronze (54.29). The top three finishers all made the "A" cut of 54.30.

Wisconsin's Matt Marshall was second in the 100 back (47.93) and in the heats he was 47.77 — a mere 05 off the "A" cut of 47.72.

On the 1-meter board, Iowa sophomore Tino Klami won the Hawkeyes' initial gold with his 696.40 total.

Michigan moved into first with its 800 free relay victory in 6:24.33 to Minnesota's 6:26.08, both teams making the "A" cut. Freshman Davis Tarwater led off in a solid 1:36.83 for the blue and maize, then Mangieri, 500 free champ Peter Vanderkaay and Kertchum on the anchor followed, Their time was a pool record, breaking Minnesota's 6:30.46 from '00.

Michigan has Vanderkaay and Nelligan, both potential victors, in Saturday's 1650 free but Minnesota will counter with Justin Mortimer, third at NCAAs two seasons ago in a pr and Gopher-record 14:47.82 — fster than either of the top two Michigan swimemrs' prs.

Minnesota's Hopwood will be favored in the 200 breast, Smolinski is a contender in the 200 back and Allan Ong is a strong prspect for gold in the 200 fly. Siklaitis will be gunning for his thrid win in the 100 free while Botes is the event's defending champ. If Michigan is to win its first championship since Y2K, it will have to rely on its depth and get big performances from swimmers like Sayao and rookies Tarwater, backstroker Chris deJong, Vanderkaay plus the veterans will have to perform above and beyond.
