Men’s NCAA Div I. Championships, Finals: Northwestern’s Matt Grevers Repeats as 100 Backstroke Champion

By Phillip Whitten

ATLANTA, Ga. March 24. LESS than a second separated all eight finalists in this morning’s prelims of the 100 back, and while Northwestern’s Matt Grevers, the defending champion, was a slight favorite, the race was really up for grabs.

Grevers proved to be the class of a classy field, leading all the way but hotly pursued by Auburn’s Doug Van Wie. The Northwestern junior split 22.24, then powered home to win in 45.93. Van Wie was second in 46.22 while Arizona’s Nick Thoman was third in 46.67.

Albert Subirats finished seventh for Arizona to give the Cats their first lead over Auburn, 296.5 to 289.5. Stanford was third in 216.5.
