Men’s NCAA Div I. Championships, Finals: Cal’s Barbosa Takes the 100 Breaststroke as Arizona Closes to Within One Point of Auburn

By Phillip Whitten

ATLANTA, Ga. March 24. INDIANA’s Kevin Swander took the lead at the start and kept it for about 95 yards. But it was Cal’s Henrique Barbosa, a Brazilian, who got his hands on the pads first, in 52.52, with Swander just two-hundredths of a second behind.

Arizona’s Dave Rollins, sixth at the 50, moved up to third in 52.91.

At the end of the breaststroke, Auburn was clinging to a one-point lead over surging Arizona, with Stanford, wounded by its DQ in the medley relay, 65 points in arrears.
