Men’s Big XII Relays

AUSTIN, Texas, October 24. NUMBER one Texas captured 14 events en route to victory Friday at the annual Big 12 Relays, a meet that gives teams a chance to contest relays in all four strokes. Texas took first with 117 points while Missouri took second with 92 points. Texas A&M placed third with 79 points.

"We raced well, and we learned that we have a long way to go to be in top form at season's end," UT assistant men's swimming coach Kris Kubik said. "There are many things we need to fine tune, such as our starts, our efficiency in the water and our race management. It was a great start for our freshmen to be indoctrinated into what Texas swimming is all about, and that is racing tough and trying to finish well."

The Horns scored their first win in the 300-yard butterfly relay, as sophomore Brian Wilson, senior Michael Klueh and freshman Neil Caskey finished in 2:30.59. Texas added a win in the 300 backstroke relay, where junior Hill Taylor, sophomore Scott Jostes and senior Sean Patton clocked 2:31.59.

Texas posted a 22-second victory in the 3×500 freestyle relay, as Klueh and freshmen Kyle McNeilis and Jackson Wilcox finished in 14:00.65. UT followed with a win in the 400 freestyle relay, as junior Ben Van Roekel, senior Ryan Verlatti, sophomore Jonathan Jackson and freshman Jimmy Feigen finished in 3:06.98. Taylor, freshman Eric Friedland, Wilson and Van Roekel later teamed up to win the 200 medley relay in 1:33.35.

Van Roekel, Verlatti, Jackson and Feigen took the 200 free relay in 1:24.21, and Taylor, Friedland, Wilson and Klueh claimed the 400 medley relay in 3:24.60. Another unconventional event, the 4×100 IM relay, posed little trouble for Texas, as redshirt freshman Austin Stahley, Klueh, Wilson and Friedland finished won in 3:31.90.

UT chalked up a win in the 800 freestyle relay when Wilcox, Verlatti, Caskey and McNeilis finished in 6:51.48. The Horns added a victory in the 150 butterfly relay, as Taylor, Jostes and Feigen finished in 1:08.04. Taylor, Jostes and Patton scored a win in the 150 backstroke relay in 1:09.10.

UT cruised to victory in the 200-400-200 IM relay, where Klueh, freshman Hayes Johnson and Wilson finished in 7:55.20. Jackson, Van Roekel, Feigen and Verlatti scored a narrow win in the 100 freestyle relay, finishing in 38.73, five one-hundredths of a second ahead of Texas A&M.

Texas finished off the meet with a win in the three-meter diving relay – featuring three divers performing two divers apiece – with 339.65 points.

Texas returns to action on Friday, Oct. 31 against Indiana and Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
