Men’s 10m Platform : Mathew Helm Spys the Top Spot After Prelimiaries

ATHENS, Greece, August 27. AUSSIE Mathew Helm, already a platform bronze medalist in the synchronized event here, was the top qualifier during Friday's 10m Platform preliminary competition per reports from meet orgainzers.

Starting out slowly, he ranked ninth after the first round, Helm improved as the competition went on posting the highest score among all competitors in two of his last three dives.

He finished the competition with 513.06 points, ahead of Alexandre Desspatie from Canada, 3m Springboard silver medallist, with 500.55 points and Tian Liang from China, gold medallist in the Synchronized 10m event, third with 481.47 points. Peter Waterfield, from Great Britain, who won silver in the platform synchro event, ranks fourth.

Despatie, the reigning world champion is confident for the semi-final and final. "I did not do too much today, but that's good because in the 3m event I did great in the preliminary, but I did not do so good in the final. I am happy about how it turned out today. I am confident for the final tomorrow. There are a couple of things I would like to work on for tomorrow."

Eighteen divers qualified for the semifinals, which will be held on Saturday, 28 August at 12:00 at the Olympic Aquatic Centre. The final is scheduled for 21:00 on the same day.

Neither American moved to the next stage. Caesar Garcia was 23rd at 388.77, over 124 points off the lead total. Kyle Prandi was 29th of 33 with 346.53, 166.53 behind.
