Meet-Record Twosome Erased in Day Three Prelims at Pan Pacs

VICTORIA, British Columbia, Aug. 19. DURING the first weekend competition at the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships, a pair of championship standards fell throughout third-day preliminary swims in Victoria, British Columbia on Saturday. World-record holder Ian Crocker downed the 100-meter fly standard, while Japan’s Takami Igarashi wiped out the 200-meter backstroke record in the following heats.

Women’s 400-meter freestyle
A healthy mix of countries represented the top-eight finishers in the women’s 400-meter freestyle as Australia picked up two spots, the United States grabbed four and Japan earned two.

Australian Bronte Barratt touched out American Katie Hoff in heat three of preliminary competition as Barratt stopped the clock in 4:09.55, while Hoff hit the wall at 4:09.70. At the 300-meter mark, it looked like Hoff would run away with the top spot as she stretched her lead over Barratt to 3:05.48 to 3:06.69. The Australian, however, would have none of it as she kicked it into high gear to make up the difference in the final 100 meters.

Swimming World Magazine’s Female National High School Swimmer of the Year Kate Ziegler, who also claimed the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National title in the event earlier this month, qualified third in 4:10.94.

Other swimmers in the top eight included Japan’s Ai Shibata (4th/4:11.04) and Sachiko Yamada (5th/4:11.22), United States’ Kelsey Ditto (6th/4:12.04), Australia’s Linda MacKenzie (7th/4:12.10) and United States’ Hayley Peirsol (8th/4:12.34).

Men’s 400-meter freestyle
An extremely competitive heat, the fifth of five, produced the top five times of prelims in the 400-meter freestyle relay. Korean Tae Hwan Park and American Klete Keller battled through the first 350 meters of the event, trading the lead at both the 250-meter and the 350-meter marks, before Park dropped the hammer in the final 50 meters to post the top time of the morning with a 3:50.41.

Meanwhile, Keller’s compatriot Robert Margalis tracked down the USA Swimming National titlist in the event earlier this month with a 27.65 split during the final 50 meters to move into the second qualifying spot in 3:50.75. Keller wound up settling for third with a 3:50.92, but will be one of two U.S. representatives in the evening finals.

The United States dominated the rest of the top eight as Erik Vendt (5th/3:51.56), Peter Vanderkaay (6th/3:51.94) and Ryan Lochte (7th/3:52.33) picked up three of the final five spots, while Canada’s Andrew Hurd – the 800-meter freestyle winner – took fourth in 3:51.20 and China’s Lin Zhang finished eighth in 3:52.49.

Men’s 100-meter butterfly
World-record holder Ian Crocker provided the first meet standard of the day as he turned in an eye-popping 51.78 during preliminary action in the 100 fly. That time eclipsed the 52.21 he put on the board in 2002. Additionally, Crocker went out like a flash with a 23.98 at the 50-meter mark, before bringing it home in 27.80.

Japan’s Ryo Takayasu and South Africa’s Lyndon Ferns tied for the second-best time of the morning in 52.96, while Japan continues to demonstrate its depth in the butterfly arena as Takashi Yamamoto (53.24) and Ryuichi Shibata (53.26) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Brazilians Gabriel Mangabeira (6th/53.35) and Kaio Almeida (7th/53.44) as well as American Davis Tarwater (8th/53.58) closed out the rest of the top eight.

Women’s 200-meter backstroke
After a shocking upset-victory of Japan’s Hanae Ito over 100 back world-record holder Natalie Coughlin on the first night of competition, the Japanese made a statement during prelims of the longer backstroke event. Takami Igarashi punched the clock in a meet-record time of 2:10.02, which surpassed the 15-year-old record of 2:10.79 previously set by New Zealand’s Anna Simcic in 1991.

Meanwhile, Japan registered the second and fourth-best efforts of the morning as Reiko Nakamura touched in 2:10.14 for second and Ito recorded a fourth-place 2:10.76. Additionally, American Margaret Hoelzer, the USA Swimming National titlist in the event earlier this month, placed third in 2:10.20. Amazingly, each top-four time went under Simcic’s championship standard.

In other action, American youngster Elizabeth Beisel placed fifth in 2:11.68, while Australian Joanna Fargus finished sixth in 2:12.30. New Zealand’s Melissa Ingram (7th/2:12.75) and Australia’s Fran Adcock (8th/2:12.88) rounded out the top eight.

In the main event in which Phelps is a continual underdog, Peirsol went out in 56.94 with Phelps nearly a second behind in 57.90.
