Meet of the Week, Recap: John Carroll at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio, November 8. IN a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week, the Mount Union men's swimming and diving team defeated rival John Carroll, 157.5-136.5, earning its first win of the season. On the women's side, Mount Union fell short to John Carroll. The Blue Streaks outscored the Purple Raiders, 161-139, bouncing back from last night's seven point loss to Notre Dame (South Euclid, Ohio).

"It was a typical Mount-Carroll meet. There was a lot of spirit," said John Carroll head coach Matt Lenhart. "The Mount Union guys came to swim. I felt that the [John Carroll] women had a good meet although they were a little tired."

John Carroll opened the meet with first-place finishes in the men's and women's 200 medley relay. Blake Pinchot, Alex Vereshchagin, Eric Davis, and Max Wilberding teamed up for a winning time of 1:42.74. The quartet of Samantha Mossman, Melissa Fillmore, Katie Mathews, and Liana Sved finished in 1:56.68.

Sophomores Matt Carlozzi (Mount Union) and Heidi Benson (John Carroll) swept the distance races. Carlozzi won the 1,000 freestyle in 10:42.50 and the 500 freestyle in 5:08.67. Benson took first in the 1,000 (11:05.86) and 500 (5:32.56) freestyle events as well.

Vereshchagin had dual individual wins in the 200 (1:49.88) and 100 (49.92) freestyles. On the women's side, the results were the same for Sarah Noble of Mount Union. Noble had first-place finishes in the 200 (2:03.38) and 100 (57.78) freestyles.

Mount Union's Alyson Kolesar won the 100 backstroke (1:03.31). She took second to Andrea Kovacs (John Carroll) in the 50 freestyle by .18 seconds. Kovacs finished in 26.83 for the win.

In the men's 50 freestyle, it was a .01 second race between freshman Marcus Suffolk and junior Andy Neimes of Mount Union. Suffolk sprinted a 23.26 for a first-place finish.

Nick Ljubi (Mount Union) won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.00) while his teammate, Mike Kuzma, took the 200 breaststroke (2:23.82). Fillmore continued her winning streak with wins in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.10) and 200 breaststroke (2:38.16).

Senior Dan Hampu (Mount Union) and freshman Brittany Krauth (John Carroll) highlighted the meet with three individual wins each, scoring 27 points for their respective team. They both won the 200 backstroke (Hampu – 2:08.20, Krauth – 2:17.63) and 200 IM (Hampu – 2:12.81, Krauth – 2:23.03). Hampu took first in the 100 backstroke (57.76), while Krauth captured her third win in the 200 butterfly (2:19.24).

In the 100 butterfly, John Carroll secured wins on both sides. Davis finished in 55.91 for the men and Matthews finished in 1:03.03 for the women. Davis won the 200 butterfly as well (2:06.60).

John Carroll's Stanton Kochanek and Mount Union's Mary Vallinger won both of the 1-meter diving events. Kochanek finished with scores of 130.75 and 184.85. Vallinger finished with scores of 168.55 and 229.50.

Mount Union closed the meet with first-place finishes in the men's and women's 200 freestyle relays. Neimes, Carlozzi, and Suffolk teamed up with Sean Jeffers for a time of 1:32.98. On the women's side, Kolesar and Noble combined with Kamiren Veisz and Melissa Dreger for a 1:46.35 finish.

"Overall, I was very impressed with the team performance," said Eric Mojock, Mount Union's head coach. "The girls did a great job diving and there were some close races. The men came through and I look forward to the OAC meet."
