Meet of the Week Recap: Hartwick Men Upend St. Lawrence, 139-97

CANTON, New York, January 20. THE Hartwick College men finished the day with a 139-97 triumph over St. Lawrence in Canton, N.Y., on Saturday in a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week. In the end, Hartwick captured seven events, while St. Lawrence claimed six.

HC proved to be too deep for SLU to handle as Hartwick had only one multiple-event winner with Kevin Milkovich winning back-to-back events in the 400 IM and 100 fly. St. Lawrence, on the other hand, was top heavy with a trio of student-athletes accounting for their titles. Chris Woolston (100 back and 200 free), Robo Ibler (50 and 100 free) and Jason Johnson (one-meter and three-meter diving) each grabbed a pair of event titles.

200 medley relay
Hartwick College picked up a 13-4 advantage after the first event when the foursome of Brett Mann, Gregg Ducey, Kenny Roy and Mike Brown touched in 1:43.84. Meanwhile, SLU's Chris Woolston, Stez Dally, Robo Ibler and Brandon Barone finished second in 1:43.91.

1000 freestyle
HC pushed its lead to 28-8 with a top-two sweep when Kevin Kolbe dominated the field with a 10:33.50 in the distance free and teammate Craig Leaness took second in 10:52.36. SLU's Mike Trumbower closed out the top three in 10:55.87.

200 freestyle
The Saints cut the lead to 37-18 when Chris Woolston won the 200 free in 1:50.82. Hartwick went 2-3 with Brett Mann (1:53.78) and Mike Brown (1:58.75) picked up second and third, respectively.

50 freestyle
Robo Ibler helped the Saints shave a bit off the lead to close within 46-28 with a first-place time of 22.95 in the 50 free. HC grabbed second and third as Steve VanDuzer (23.16) and Paul Layton (23.45) rounded out the rest of the podium.

400 IM
Hartwick stretched its lead to 60-32 with a 1-3 effort in the 400 IM. Kevin Milkovich clocked a first-place time of 4:19.85, while teammate Sam Hagen placed third in 4:42.73. Matt Kirkpatrick split the difference for SLU in 4:33.00 for second place.

100 butterfly
Kevin Milkovich went back-to-back with a win in the 100 fly in a time of 57.15, while teammate Brett Mann took second in 57.58 to increase HC's lead to 75-36. Matt Kirkpatrick took third for SLU in 58.78.

100 freestyle
Robo Ibler went 2-for-2 in the sprint frees with a winning time of 50.57 in the 100 free. Hartwick's Steve VanDuzer (51.57) and Mike Brown (53.64) took second and third place, respectively. At the end of the event, Hartwick held an 84-46 advantage.

100 backstroke
Chris Woolston pocketed his second individual win with a time of 55.61 in the 100 back to help SLU cut the gap to 90-59. Paul Layton placed second for HC in 57.28, while Matt Feldman of St. Lawrence finished third in 1:01.11.

500 freestyle
Hartwick swept the top-two spots en route to a 105-63 advantage when Craig Leaness hit the wall first in 5:10.02, while Kevin Kolbe took second in 5:10.46. Matt Kirkpatrick closed out the top three for SLU in 5:20.77.

100 breaststroke
HC grabbed a 120-47 lead with a 1-2 finish when Gregg Ducey touched in 1:03.21, while Tony Riley took second in 1:05.03. SLU's Stez Dally placed third in 1:06.30.

200 freestyle relay
Hartwick wound up winning the 200 free to take a 133-71 lead with a time of 1:33.89, while St. Lawrence's team took second in 1:41.65.

Diving
SLU's Jason Johnson swept the diving events with a 203.15 in the one-meter and a 250.10 in the three-meter. The diving effort put the final score at 139-97 with Hartwick finishing on top.
