Meet of the Week Preview: St. Olaf Quadrangular

By Jason Marsteller

PHOENIX, Arizona, November 9. IN the third Meet of the Week for SwimmingWorldMagazine.com this week, St. Olaf hosts Augsburg, St. Catherine's and St. Mary's for a quadrangular meet in Minnesota.

We will also keep an eye on the women's meet featuring No. 3 Stanford and No. 4 Auburn heading to Knoxville to take on No. 15 Tennessee. Additionally, the Cal State Bakersfield versus UC San Diego tilt is on the menu.

With that being said, here is a quick preview of the St. Olaf Quadrangular:

Date and Time: Saturday, November 11, 2006 – 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Location: Northfield, Minn.
Facility: Skoglund Natatorium

Augsburg's Last Time Out:
Competing in two multi-team meets over the weekend, the Augsburg College women's swimming team claimed two dual-meet victories, topping fellow Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference program St. Mary's University in a quadrangular meet on Nov. 3 at Hamline University, and beating Minnesota-Morris in a triangular meet on Nov. 4 at the College of St. Catherine. In the quadrangular meet at Hamline, Augsburg downed St. Mary's 107-89, while falling 179-44 to host Hamline and 192-38 to Macalester. In the triangular meet, host St. Catherine topped Augsburg 55-40, while Augsburg beat Minnesota-Morris 59-41.

Augsburg claimed two individual event victories and a relay win at St. Catherine. Stefanie Sanders won the 50 freestyle in 27.82 seconds, while Kasi Clauson claimed a win in the 100 butterfly (1:07.41). Clauson and Sanders were also a part of the 200 medley relay squad, along with Melissa Warfield and Liz Wiggen, that claimed victory in the event in 1:52.24.

Looking forward with Augsburg head coach Mike Goldman:
The team has performed quite well the last two meets despite being at the end of a hard training cycle. The swimmers will be exploring alternate events this week in preparation for the conference meet in February.

St. Catherine's Last Time Out:
The College of St. Catherine swimming team defeated both Augsburg College and the University of Minnesota-Morris in separate duals on Nov. 4 at the Aquatics Center on the College of St. Catherine campus.

Wildcat swimmers won five races in the meet, including four individual winners. Individual winners for the Wildcats include Allie Jones who won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 12:28.75. Erica Campbell won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:08.98. Kim Folden's time of 6:10.90 was good enough to win the 500 freestyle and Jennifer Lippitt won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.11.

Looking forward with St. Catherine's head coach Nicole Roberts:
The meet this weekend will be a good all-around competition for my team. St. Olaf is once again one of the strongest forces within our conference, which will allow for more competition for my top swimmers. The other two teams at the meet, Augsburg and St. Mary's, are more on our level and will allow for great competition amongst all of our swimmers. This meet will also be the first that we will be swimming the 200 strokes, so it will be great to see how my team is looking in those events. We are looking forward to a fun and challenging meet.

St. Mary's Last Time Out:
A day after dropping back-to-back dual-meet decisions to Hamline and Augsburg, Saint Mary's University jumped back in the pool on Nov. 4, and Concordia proved to be anything but a gracious host. The Cobbers placed first in every event they competed in en route to a convincing dual-meet win over the weary Cardinals.

Kasey Schultz posted one of SMU's four second-place finishes to fuel the Cardinals, stopping the clock in 12:48.19 in the 1000 freestyle. Margaret Walsh added a second in the 100 freestyle (1:02.88), while Courtney Keyler (1:10.37, 100 backstroke) and Sarah Hayden (137.60, 1-meter diving) also posted second-place efforts.

Looking forward with St. Mary's head coach Eric Lundquist:
This weekend's meet should be an interesting one. Any time you swim the Oles, you are up against the best. The Haucks and St. Olaf swimming have had great teams in the past, and from what I've seen this year is no different. An invite format is best for Saint Mary's. We don't have the depth of some programs, but can hold our own in many events. Our women were edged out by Augsburg a week ago, but we were down a few athletes and expect to see significant improvement. We have an ever-improving men's team, and should see some very exciting things from our both our upperclassmen and freshmen.

St. Olaf's Last Time Out:
At the Northfield Colleges Quad Classic on Nov. 4, St. Olaf's came home with 14 individual titles as well as one relay crown.

On the men's side, the foursome of Adam Meyer, Ben Wareham, Nelson Westby and Jake Koch touched in 1:35.60 to win the 200 medley relay. Koch, Wareham and diver Blaise Dourous also doubled up at the event. Koch brought hom the 50 free (21.81) and 100 free (48.89) titles, while Wareham swept the breaststroke events with a 1:00.72 in the 100 and 2:14.30 in the 200. Dourous also swept the diving events with a 307.80 in the one-meter and a 331.95 in the three-meter. Other individual winners for the men included: Joe Anderson in the 500 free (4:50.48), Nate Bentley in the 400 IM (4:25.26), Tom Kukla in the 200 back (1:57.48), Meyer in the 100 back (52.23) and Westby in the 200 free (1:45.19)

For the women, Kelly Dolan recorded a deuce of her own with wins in the 200 free (2:00.32) and 400 IM (4:51.68). Meanwhile, Julie Rood clocked a first-place 1:00.82 in the 100 fly to close out the title-winning performances for the Oles.

We could not get in contact with St. Olaf's coaching staff over the past week.
