Meca, Van Dijk Continue to Dominate Marathon Swimming

February 19. WORLD OPEN WATER Champions David Meca-Medina, of Spain, and Edith Van Dijk, of Holland, continued to dominate their opposition, no matter what the distance, on the FINA Marathon World Cup circuit.

Competing in the first two events in the series, Meca won both men's contests while Van Dijk emerged the winner in both women's events.

With prize money of $26,500 at stake, Meca won the Maraton Acuatica river swim from Santa Fe to Coronda, Argentina–a distance of 57 kilometers–in 7 hours, 29 minutes and 52 seconds, nearly two minutes ahead of France's Stephane Lecat.

Van Dijk took the women's version of the race in 7:46.18, well ahead of Germany's Britta Kamrau (7:56.03) and the USA's Morgan Filler (8:39.32). Only three women finished the gruelling event.

One week later, the venue and distance had changed, but the result was familiar. Meca took the Puerto Gaboto-to-Rosario river race, a 60K jaunt, in 6:18.06 to earn the lion's share of the $25,000 in prize money. This time the contest was closer, as Germany's
Christof Wandratsch (6:19.02) and Bulgaria's Petar Stoytchev (6:19.07) were right on his heels.

Van Dijk had an easier time of it, winning the women's race in 6.32:56, nearly seven minutes in front of Germany's Britta Kamrau (6:39.54).
