Meb’s NCAA Div. I Championships: Lochte Sets Another Record — 1:37.68 for the 200 Back!

By Phillip Whitten

ATLANTA, Georgia, March 25. ARE you kidding me?

Are you kidding me?

After the prelims, Florida head coach Greg Troy told me he felt Ryan Lochte could break his American record of 1:38.29 if he wasn’t too tired.

Tired? Lochte doesn’t know from tired.

The Florida senior went after his record from the start, splitting about a second ahead of his record pace at the 50, 100 and 150 yard turn before touching in 1:37.68.

Yes, you read that right: 1:37.68. Yes, for backstroke!!

Lochte’s splits: 22.64
47.42 (24.78)
1; 12.14 (24.72)
1:37.68 (25.54)

Stanford’s Hongzhe Sun was second in 1;40.25 while Arizona’s Nick Thoman took third in 1:41.31 for 16 points. Auburn’s Doug Van Wie and JamesWike finished seventh and eighth for 23points, giving Auburn a two-point lead.
