McCaffreyCap: Feb. 3, 2011

You've found the McCaffreyCap where we try to take a lighter look at the latest swimming news. This week in the rundown, USA Swimming goes Busch league, the Australians relaunch the Thorpedo, we look back on one of the best, and we hit the weight with Reezy… Take your mark.

Frank Busch will be the new National Team Director for USA Swimming and I have a huge issue with. My issue? There is no issue. It's a great hire. Can you think of anyone in this sport who doesn't like Frank Busch? Me neither. He built one of the top programs in the country, and he did it with a family like approach where he balanced men and women to create arguably the closest combined program in the country. He's trusted. He's got a bunch of National Team coaching experience, and he's an all around great guy. He's the perfect hire. But he's stepping into a position that not all of his decisions can please everyone, and when he slips up… oh yeah, I'll be ready.

We've talked about the mumblings for weeks, but on Wednesday Ian Thorpe made it official he wants to swim in London. In order to make it back for the Australian Olympic Trials, the Thorpedo has to register with FINA as a competitor before May, which gives him just under 4 months to do a couple cycles of steroids before he will be tested by the sport's governing body. I'm not saying he will, I'm just saying he could…

This week SwimmingWorld got confirmation from Texas coach Eddie Reese that we've seen the end of an era for USA Backstroke. Aaron Peirsol has held the top sport as far as favorite swimmers go for many die-hard swim fans, and that includes me. He won 7 Olympic Medals, including 5 golds over 3 Olympic Games. He is the current World Record holder in both backstroke distances, and his presence on deck was like no one else. He had the ability to be laid back but frighteningly confident. He put the BA in backtroke and he will be missed dearly by swimming fans around the world.

USA Backstroke is still in good hands.

Ryan Lochte is doing work right now. How do I know? The internet… What kind of workout did you do today? That's just a glimpse at the weight workout, check out the full workout at purepowerathlete.com.

We're going to stop the clock right there on this week's show, and remember that's just one man's recap.
