Mayfield, Schwartz Prevail in New York’s Park-to-Park One-Mile Swim

NEW YORK, June 19. CHRISTOPHER Mayfield, 36, from Tarrytown, NY, placed first in the eighth annual Park-to-Park One Mile Swim on Saturday. His winning time was 24:12. Bonnie Schwartz, New York, won the women's division with a time of 25:11, finishing third overall. They led the field of 188 swimmers, setting a record for the event.

A pair of Brooklyn swimmers took second and third place in the women's division. Kara Mitchell was second with a time of 26:43 and Jennifer Mayman placed third in 27:02. Rounding out the men's division, Jeffrey Gall, 24, from State College, PA, finished second with a time of 25:08, and John Sullivan, 44, of Brooklyn, was third with a time of 25:16. This year's swim started at a new location: Riverside Park at 147th Street, just north of Riverbank Sate Park. Swimmers entered the Hudson River at 11:35 a.m., and made their way north up the river to finish at Fort Washington Park at 165th Street, just short of the George Washington Bridge.

Swimmers representing 12 states and four countries, ranging from 16-63 years old, competed in the 64.8-degree water. The Park-to-Park Swim is organized and sponsored by the Manhattan Island Foundation (MIF). Proceeds from the swim benefit the Parks & Recreation Learn to Swim program, which helps establish swimming programs for children as well as rehabilitate swimming pools. Next weekend is MIF's cornerstone event, one of the premier annual international marathon swim races: the 24th annual Manhattan Island Marathon Swim (MIMS) on Saturday.
