Massachusetts-Amherst vs. Army

WEST POINT, New York, October 22. THE Army men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a dual match with Massachusetts at Crandall Pool Saturday afternoon. The Black Knight men defeated the Minutemen, 177-112, while the women suffered a heart-breaking 151-149 loss to the Minutewomen.

Army's men captured 11 of the first 13 events (sweeping the top three spots in four and going one-two in three others), then swam exhibition over the final three en route to stretching its unbeaten mark to 4-0.

Double winners Will Viana and Joon Chung set the pace in the men's meet. Viana touched first in the 200 freestyle (1:42.22) and the 500 free, leading an Army sweep in both. He nipped teammate Casey Woudenberg by 4/100s of a point to take top honors in the 500 free in 4:43.66, along with a second in the 200 back (1:54.36) sandwiched in between his two wins.

Chung swept both breaststroke events, registering a 58.31 in the shorter 100 as Army went one-two, than claimed the 200 in 2:08.82. His exhibition time of 1:56.71 in the 200 IM was the lowest clocking in that event.

Also joining the winners' circle were Woudenberg in the 1000 free (9:46.17); Spencer LeeMurakami, 200 fly (1:54.68); Dan Foky, 50 free (21.43); Chris Nguyen, 3-meter diving (321.60 points); Bill McCarty, 100 free (47.66) and Ayman Andrews, 100 fly (49.97).

The Black Knights swept the 200 free, 200 fly, 100 free and 500 free, and went one-two in the 100 breast, 50 free and 3-meter diving. Army also won the opening 200-yard medley relay in 1:34.20 with Kenny Yacynych, Carter Kelly, Andrews and Foky rounding out that contingent.

In the women's meet, Army and Massachusetts split the 16 events down the middle, but the Minutewomen captured the final three events. They went one-two in the three-meter diving and put the lid on the win by capturing the 200 IM and the final 400 free relay.

Alyssa Tran had a hand in four of Army's eight wins. She tripled and swam the second leg on the opening 200-yard medley relay, and Lara Stouffer was a double winner in the backstroke events.

Tran won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.86), the 50 free (24.15) and posted Army's final win in the 100 fly (56.36). Joining Tran on the winning 200 medley relay were Meghan Buckley, Paige Brink and Grace Hamilton, who combined their talents for a clocking of 1:49.21.

Stouffer captured both backstroke events, taking the 100 in 1:00.62 and the longer 200 in 2:09.59. Also joining the winners circle were Brink, 200 butterfly (2:10.36) and Hamilton, 100 free (53.80).

Idle this week, Army returns to action Nov. 5 hosting Connecticut at Crandall Pool.
