Maryland, Rutgers vs. Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, January 8. THE Maryland swimming and diving team split a pair to ring in the New Year Saturday, defeating Rutgers in women's action and falling to a tough Navy squad on the men's side.

The women's team started 2011 with a bang, defeating Rutgers, 180-119. Maryland began the dual meet by winning the 400 short course meter medley relay (4:15.76) and wrapped up the day by taking first in the 200 SC free relay (1:46.57).

Ginny Glover captured both the 200 SC free (2:04.34) and 200 SC back (2:16.26) while senior Annie Fittin also won a pair, touching the wall first in the 100 SC back (1:03.72) and 100 SC free (57.49).

Other first place finishes included Alexa Hamilton (100 SC breast – 1:12.94; 200 SC breast – 2:34.45), Addison Koelle (200 SC fly – 2:17.95) and Megan Lafferty (50 SC free – 26.68; 100 SC fly – 1:03.16).

Erin Stout had a career day, finishing in the top three in the 200 SC free (2:05.97), 100 SC free (59.42), and 400 SC free (4:31.08). Other top three finishers included Elena Donald in the 100 SC back (1:05.05) and 200 SC back (2:23.50), Meggie Schmidt (2:18.92) and Jenni Roberts (2:21.54) in the 200 SC fly, Blair Cross in the 50 SC free (27.18), and Jessica Whelan in the 1-meter dive (276.05) and 3-meter dive (286.65).

Martha Van LieShout took third in both the 200 SC IM (2:22.38) and 200 SC breast (2:40.62). Freshman Jenni Roberts was second in the 200 SC IM (2:22.10) and Koelle took second in the 100 SC fly (1:04.19).

On the men's side, the Terps fell, 162-124. Andrew Relihan finished first in both the 200 SC back (2:03.28) and 200 SC IM (2:06.82).

Mitch Challacombe and Andrew Fisher went 2-3 in the 100 back, touching the wall at 58.32 and 58.90, respectively. Challacombe also took fourth in the 100 SC free (52.99).

Roger Dent was third in the 200 SC fly (2:06.20) and the 200 SC free relay finished second, with the team of Challacombe, John Hauser, Matt Gruszecki and Pete Fittin finishing at 1:35.71. Tim Tolino was Maryland's top diver on the day, taking fourth in the 1-meter (273.05).

Maryland returns to action next weekend when it plays host to a quad against Pittsburgh, Villanova, and Penn State Friday and Saturday at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
