Maryland Invitational, Day Two

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland. November 21. DIVER Austin Hampton set a new Maryland pool record and both the Wolfpack men's and women's teams got several more all-time top-10 times in another strong day at the Maryland Invitational. The Wolfpack women climbed from fourth to second overall with 422 total points, while the men remain in first place following the second day of action with 650.

Erica Smith, Anna Linkenauger, Patrice Dason and Ashley Richter combined for a 1:43.86 in the 200-medley relay, tying the school's second best-ever mark which the exact same foursome set last year. Jessica Ward then took third (4:27.68) in the 400 IM, while Jennifer Kopenitz placed fifth (4:29.14) and Jessica McBroom took sixth (4:29.23). Maresa Like-Matthews put up the 10th-best time in school history in the 400 IM consolation swim, posting a 4:27.51.

Meg Thompson recorded the school's sixth-best 100 butterfly time in the prelims with a 56.00, before placing seventh in the finals with a 56.94. Dason took fifth with a 56.73 after clocking in at 56.24 in the prelims. Richter's seventh-place showing in the 200 free with a 1:50.79 now stands as the sixth-fastest mark in Wolfpack history.

Ward grabbed the ninth-quickest mark ever at NC State in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:05.26 for fourth-place, while Linkenauger added a 1:05.32 for ninth. Smith tied the school record, which she set just yesterday, with a 55.56 in the 100 backstroke before Linkenauger, Lucy Lindsey, Erica Waters and Richter placed second with a 7:32.00 in the 800 free relay.

Hampton set a new pool record at Maryland with his first-place score of 348.10 in the 1-meter dive. Teammate Scott Blackwelder finished ninth with a 211.35.

Stephen Mellor, Dan Forsythe, Taylor Goodwin and Conor Brennan finished second in the 200-medley relay with a combined 1:31.48. Mason McGee then won the 400 IM with a 3:58.26, while Andrew Lester (4:01.54 finals / 4:01.49 prelims) and Jimmy Ross (4:06.66) wound up third and fourth respectively. Mellor (49.96) and Sean Reams (50.11) finished back-to-back at fifth and sixth in the 100 butterfly.

Gaites Brown placed third in the 200 free with a 1:40.55 after posting a 1:40.42 in prelims. Nick Brittis finished sixth on a 1:42.31, also posting a better mark in the prelims with a 1:42.01. Forsythe then took fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a 56.50. Goodwin (50.82) and Ben Mechak (51.62) took third and fifth in the 100 backstroke, and McGee, Mellor, Brown and Kevin Woodhull-Smith followed by claiming first in the 800 free relay with a 6:38.98. McGee's 1:37.13 leadoff 200 freestyle time is the new second-best mark in school history.
