Marist Swimming Sweeps Canisius

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York, October 17. Marist swimming swept Canisius today.  The men picked up a 158-142 win, while the women topped Canisius, 172-121.

The Marist women’s swimming and diving team emerged with a 172-121 victory over Canisius in the 2014-15 regular season opener Oct. 17 in McCann Natatorium.

Freshman Karly Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with three first-place finishes in her collegiate debut. She began the day by finishing the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:31.40, then clocked 2:06.55 in the 200-yard backstroke. She swam to a first-place time of 5:10.06 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Sophomore Isabella Morreale (Short Hills, N.J.) was successful in individual and relay events, winning the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes with times of 1:07.58 and 2:27.36, respectively. She was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that took first place to open the meet along with sophomore Colleen Lampe (East Setauket, N.Y.), sophomore Meredith Wurtz (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and junior Bridget Curley (Endwell, N.Y.).

Wurtz also won both freestyle events, swimming 50 yards in 24.56 seconds and 100 yards in 53.01 seconds. In the 100-yard backstroke, junior captain Bethany Powhida (Delmar, N.Y.) placed first with a time of 59.74 seconds. She took second in the 200-yard event (2:07.87).

Marist picked up wins in the 1- and 3-meter dive from senior captain Kimberly Tobias (San Jose, Calif.). She earned 253.80 points at one meter and 244.50 at three meters. Freshman Megan Berardelli (Ambler, Pa.) finished third at one meter (232.95) and second at three meters (233.25).

The Marist men’s swimming and diving team opened the 2014-15 regular season with a 158-142 victory against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Canisius on Oct. 17.

A first-place finish from senior Jason Ruddy (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) in the penultimate event opened up the meet for Marist. The Red Foxes had built a 133-131 lead before Ruddy won the 200-yard IM in 1:58.90. He finished first in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events with times of 52.47 seconds and 1:55.29 respectively. He was also a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay along with senior Spencer Kelley (Weston, Conn.), sophomore Ryan Murphy (New Fairfield, Conn.) and senior John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.). The group finished with a time of 3:13.93.

Murphy picked up three freestyle wins, taking the 200- (1:46.70), 500- (4:40.76) and 1000-yard (9:46.67) events. Spitzer won the 50- (21.97 seconds) and 100-yard (48.25 seconds) freestyle events, while Kelley finished third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free.

Junior Josh Dodway (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and senior Jacob Baker (Shavertown, Pa.) had a 2-3 finish in both diving events. Dodway scored slightly higher in the 1-meter dive, ending up with 273.52 points while finishing the 3-meter dive with 273 points. Baker scored 250.20 points at one meter and racked up 260.10 points at three meters.

The Canisius swimming and diving teams opened up the 2014-15 season with a tough loss against MAAC rival Marist as the men’s squad fell 158-142 and the women’s team fell by a score of 172-121.

Starting the scoring for the Griffs women’s team was freshman Rebecca Anthone. Anthone picked up her first collegiate victory as she finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.76, almost three seconds better than the second place finisher. Alicia Wheeler recorded the Golden Griffins second first place finish as the junior won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.19. Sophomore Marissa Watroba also won her event, finishing first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:15.89. The Blue and Gold also won the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Anthone, Erika Tozser, Marissa Oakey and Hannah Graesser, finished with a time of 3:39.64.

Leading the way for the Griffs men’s squad was sophomore Wyatt Sintay and senior diver Eddie Quarantillo. Sintay and Quarantillo each won two events in the meet, including the 200-yard breaststoke and 100-yard breaststroke by Sintay and the 1 and 3-meter diving contests by Quarantillo. Sintay finished with a time of 2:11.01 in the 200-yard breaststroke and a time of 59.64 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Quarantillo recorded a score of 289.05 in the 1-meter and a score of 275.92 in the 3-meter.

The top relay team for the Golden Griffins men’s team consisted of Tommy Kirch, Dan Dirrigl, Collin Zapsiek and Christian Westermeier. The relay team competed in the 400-yard freestyle relay and finished in second with a time of 3:14.75.

The Griffs next meet will be on Oct. 24th and 25th when the team travels to Rochester, N.Y., to compete in the University of Rochester Invite.
