Maria Lenk Trophy: Kaio Almeida, Rebecca Soni Clock Top Five Times

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 6. A pair of top-five times went up on the scoreboard during this morning's finals session at the Maria Lenk Trophy. The meet is taking place in Rio de Janeiro in a long course meters format.

Kaio Almeida improved to third in the world rankings in the men's 200 fly with a triumphant time of 1:55.22. Only Takeshi Matsuda (1:54.12) and Ryusuke Sakata (1:55.11) have been faster, while Almeida leapfrogged from fourth to third by surpassing Michael Phelps' 1:55.34 from March. Leonardo Alves Santos touched second in 1:58.38, while Leonardo De Deus earned third in 1:58.50.

Fabiola Molina tied for 11th in the world rankings with a winning time of 28.33 in the women's 50 back. Etiene Medeiros finished second in 28.58, while Duane Marce grabbed third in 28.95.

Mireia Belmonte cruised to victory in the women's 200 fly with a 2:09.95. She's been much faster this year with a fifth-ranked season-best 2:06.25 to her credit. Joanna Maranhao took second in 2:12.75, while Daiene Dias placed third in 2:14.56.

Daniel Orzechowski won the men's 50 back title in 25.65, while Guilherme Guido finished second in 25.81. Henrique Martins picked up third in 25.87.

In semifinals, Tatiana Barbosa led the way in the women's 100 free with a 55.66, while Jessica Hardy qualified second in 55.77. Bruno Fratus paced the men's 100 free with a 49.00, while Vinicius Waked (49.25) and Cesar Cielo (49.25) tied for second.

Rebecca Soni moved up to fourth in the world rankings in the women's 50 breast with a 30.99. Only Leiston Pickett (30.24), Yulia Efimova (30.46) and Jennie Johansson (30.98) have been faster. Hardy qualified second in 31.29. Felipe Silva hit the wall in 27.48 for the top seed in the men's 50 breast finale. He will be shooting for his second-ranked season-best 27.42 from earlier in the meet. Cameron van der Burgh has the top time in the world with a 27.24 from April.

In relay action, Joanna Maranhao, Manuella Lyrio, Kirsty Coventry and Jessica Cavalheiro topped the women's 800 free relay in 8:11.37. Meanwhile, Thiago Pereira, Fernando Santos, Ricky Berens and Ous Mellouli snatched the men's 800 free relay crown in 7:20.69.
