Marcin Tarczynski Wins Cal Poly Pentathlon

SAN LUIS OBISPO, California, September 23. IN a repeat performance from last season, Cal's Marcin Tarczynski was again crowned the "King of the Pool" during an exhibition pentathlon swim meet Friday (Sept. 23) at Cal Poly's Anderson Aquatic Center in San Luis Obispo, combining the day's overall fastest times in the 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 free and 100 individual medley. Tarczynski, a sophomore from Warsaw, Poland, had the lowest aggregate time of 4:16.18, edging senior teammate Martin Liivamagi's overall mark of 4:17.50 and junior standout Tom Shield's time of 4:17.79.

The three Golden Bears finished 1-2-3 during the 2010 pentathlon as well.
Tarczynski captured the "King of the Pool" honor by placing second in 100 fly (49.21), 100 back (49.77) and the 100 IM (51.69). He was also sixth in the 100 breast (58.39) and the 100 free (47.12). The individual event winners for the meet included Shields in four events – the 100 fly (48.42), 100 back (48.91), 100 free (45.37) and 100 IM (50.40). Liivamagi captured the 100 breast with a mark of 55.79.

Other notable swims for Bears was senior Nolan Koon's 55.90 in the 100 breast, freshman Tyler Messerschmidt (46.29) and freshman Fabio Gimondi (46.50) in the 100 free, and senior Mathias Gydesen's 46.77 in the 100 free. Freshman Will Hamiliton, who placed sixth with a combined 4:22.76, had a strong mark of 58.33 in the 100 breast.

On Saturday (Sept. 24), the Golden Bear men will team up with the Cal women for co-ed races in the 200-yard medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

"It is nice to get some early season racing under our belt," said Cal coach David Durden. "Marcin defended his King of the Pool title while Tom had some nice performances in the free, back and fly events. It was good to see our freshmen race, and I thought Will Hamilton had some nice performances. We are looking forward to teaming up with the women for our relay meet tomorrow."
Last March in Minneapolis, Durden guided the Bears to their first NCAA team title since 1980 and was named both National and Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. In his spectacular fourth year at Cal, Durden led his 2010-11 squad to a 4-1 (3-1 in the Pac-10) dual-meet record and a second-place finish in the conference meet before bringing the program its first national championship in 31 years with a dominating 493 to 470.5 point victory over second place Texas in the team standings.

At the 2011 NCAA meet, Durden's squad collected seven titles – the 50 and 100 frees (senior Nathan Adrian), the 100 back (sophomore Tom Shields), the 100 breast (senior Damir Dugonjic), the 400 free relay (Graeme Moore, Josh Daniels, Shields and Adrian), the 200 medley relay (Guy Barnea, Dugonjic, Moore and Adrian) and the 400 medley relay (Barnea, Dugonjic, Shields and Adrian).

This season, the Bears welcome in six new swimmers who signed letters of intent back in November, 2010 – Will Hamilton, Christian Higgins, Adam Hinshaw, Adam Jorgensen, Tyler Messerschmidt and Seth Stubblefield.
