Malmo Takes Men’s 400 Free Relay at Swedish Champs for the First Time Since 1926

by Lennart La Fleur

NORKOPPING, Sweden, June 28. THE second day of the Swedish National Championships and World Championship Trials produced no upsets and no earth-shattering times.

The highlight came in the men's 4×100 free relay when the team from Malmö won the event for the first time in 77 years. The Malmö squad Malmo, which clocked 3:26.00, was made up of Jonas Persson, erik anderson, former University of Pittsburgh standout Max von Bundungen, and current University of arizona sprint ace Eric La Fleur.

A quick rundown of today's events:

200 free men: Last year´s winner Jonas Persson did it again, but his time of 1:52.96 was disappointing. Where's Anders Holmerz when we need him?

100 fly men: Olympic champ Lars Frolander won, as expected, in 53.82, but faded noticeably in the final 15 meters. Finland´s Tero Valimaa was second in 54.47.

200 breast ladies: Emma Igelstrom was on national record pace through 150 meters, but faded on the final 50. She still managed to fashion a three-second victory in 2:30.16.

200 fly ladies: A tight race where winner Mia Brodén came from behind the last 50 meters to defeat junior Linda Knutsson and former U of Nebraska swimmer Destiny Laurén, just before SMU freshman Sara Nordenstam.

1500 free ladies: USC senior Åsa Sandlund couldn´t fully match her Swedish record from last year but won a convincing race – led from first stroke.

4×100 free men: First win for Malmö since 1926.

The semis

200 free ladies. This shapes up as an extremely interesting fight for the places on the WC team. Contestants includes M Svahnstöm, UCLA; Lotta Wänberg, a senior at SMU; and Ida Mattsson, training at Sun Devils Aquatics in Phoenix in addition to the already nominated Lillhage and Sjöberg.

200 breast men. It won't be difficult to predict the winner. Already WC nominated Martin Gustavsson will cruise to victory.
