Malibu Invitational

MALIBU, California, October 22. THE divers and the distance swimmers competed on day one of the Malibu Invitational on a sunny, warm day in Southern California. Leslie Wade was the high point scorer for the Waves in diving, while Madison Krall starred for Pepperdine in the pool.

Wade (Atlanta, Georgia/The Lovett School) scored a 219.55 overall, to place third. Her high scoring dive of the day was a back one-and-one-half with one-and-one-half twists. Sami McIntyre of Cal Poly took top honors, with a score of 239.25.

Senior Tiffany Martz (Folsom, Calif./Folsom HS) scored a 213.60 highlighted by her back one-and-one-half straight dive to finish in fifth place. Kristin Scribner (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) placed just behind her in the six spot with a score of 193.95, and Klaire Korver (Redwood City, Calif./Pinewood School) took eighth after totaling a score of 178.85.

Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) opened the afternoon with a third-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle – aka The Malibu Mile – after clocking a time of 18:06.44. Andrea Kacynski (Superior, Colo./Monarch HS) completed the race at the 19:44.44 mark to place fifth.

In the 500 freestyle, Krall was the top Pepperdine swimmer with a time of 5:16.27. Brooke Fugate (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS) and Gina Vrablik (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) also raced, and posted times of 6:17.84 and 6:27.17, respectively.

In the men's diving competition, Concordia University-Irvine's Chris Salgado took top honors with score of 278.40. Lacey Buck of Cal Poly swept the 500 and 1,630 freestyle races.

The Malibu Invitational continues tomorrow, with the middle distance and sprinting events. Action begins at 10 a.m. Fans can watch the action live and for free via Wave Casts.
