Malchow, Phelps Cruise To One, Two Seeds

By Sarah Tolar

LONG BEACH, Calif., July 9. THE men’s 200 butterfly preliminaries set the stage for what will be Michael Phelps’ second duel tonight. He will begin the evening by facing off with Klete Keller in the 200 freestyle. This morning, Tom Malchow proved that he will not roll over and give up the top spot in the 200 fly.

Malchow took his race out with apparent ease but turned it on in the last 50 to post a 1:57.93. In the heat before Malchow, John Abercrombie of Longhorn Aquatics and Michael Raab of UVA both swam sub-two minute races, with Raab at 1:58.56 and Abercrombie a second back with 1:59.59.

In the final heat, Phelps, who raced in a traditional brief suit, seemingly cruised to a 1:58.07, taking 17 strokes on the first 50 and 20 strokes for each of next three 50s. He let the field stay just ahead until the final 30 meters, when he turned on the legs and charged to the lead.

With only other six men under two minutes after prelims, it seems there is room for anyone to step up and make the final, but it will take a near-superhuman performance to dethrone Malchow or Phelps.
