Maine vs. Central Connecticut State

NEW BRITAIN, Connecticut, October 16. THE Central Connecticut swimming and diving team defeated the University of Maine today at Jack Suydam Natatorium. The Blue Devils are now 1-0 in dual meets this season following the 167.5-129.5 victory. The Blue Devils' victory was propelled by first place finishes in 13 of the 14 swimming events.

The Blue Devils started the meet with a victory in the opening event, the 200 medley relay. The Blue Devil 'A' team won the race in 1:50.6, right behind them was Central's 'B' team clocking in at 1:52.24. The 'A' squad consisted of Alex Czaplicki, Kristen Malski, Katie Lang, and Helene Neuhaus. The Blue Devils also won the 400 freestyle relay, the Central 'A' team finished in 3:39.31, and featured Taylor Friedmann, Lauren Shortell, Lang, and Neuhaus.

Individually the Blue Devils had five swimmers win a pair of events on the day. Czaplicki, Friedmann, Kristina Gulia, Lang, and Neuhaus all won two individual races, Lauren O'Kelly also picked up a victory in the 1000 freestyle (10:43.81).

Czaplicki won the 100 (1:00.09) and the 200 backstroke (2:08.56), while also contributing on the 200 medley relay team. Friedman took the 200 (1:54.46) and 500 freestyle (5:03.26) in addition to the 400 freestyle relay. Gulia, a freshman, was victorious in the 100 (1:09.15) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:27.90).

Lang participated in both relay victories and also picked up wins in the 100 (1:00.44) and 200 butterfly (2:12.03). Neuhaus, a freshman, won the 50 (00:24.97) and 100 freestlyes (00:53.92), while also contributing to both relay victories.

The Blue Devil swimmers will be in action next weekend at the UConn Invitational, while the divers will host the CCSU Diving Invite at Jack Suydam Natatorium.
