Madison Memorial Claims Fourth Straight Wisconsin D1 title

MADISON, Wisconsin, February 25. FOR the fourth straight year, the Madison Memorial Spartans finished as the top team at the Wisconsin Division 1 Boys High School Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet took place February 21-22 at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Madison Memorial combined for 319 points, ahead of Madison West (206.5), Arrowhead (194.5), Muskego (166) and Greenfield (134).

The Spartans started the meet off by finishing 5-hundredths ahead of Greenfield in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of sophomore Justin Temprano, junior Amos Kaldor, sophomore Ben Gabhart and senior John Hornacek posted a 1:33.92 to Greenfield’s 1:33.97 with the team of junior Rick Perez plus seniors Ross Rybakowicz, Shawn Lucchesi and Adam Fleischhacker. This marked the fourth straight victory for Madison Memorial in the event.

Ryan Menninga (junior), Sam Szotkowski and Nathan Eckerle (seniors) and Alex Peterson-Weber (junior) combined for a 1:25.42 triumph in the 200 free relay, the third straight win for the team. Madison Memorial was going for a fifth straight victory in the 400 free relay, but were prevented from grabbing the win by the Arrowhead squad of Logan Kozlik (junior), Nick Woida (freshman), Logan Roberts (sophomore) and Jake Barry (senior).

Madison Memorial’s Temprano gave Madison Memorial 20 first-place points in the 100 back (51.13), and Ben Gebhart topped the field in the 100 fly (50.03).

Eau Claire Memorial freshman Paul DeLakis made his high school championship debut a memorable one with victories in both the 200 IM (1:49.81) and 100 breast (56.46). Also collecting two event titles was Muskego senior Jon Roberts. Headed for Wisconsin-Milwaukee next year, Roberts scored wins in both sprint events with times of 21.10 in the 50 free and 46.05 in the 100 free.

Muskego’s Joe Szczupakiewicz, who has committed to Michigan State, posted a 4:32.05 to take charge of the 500 free. Nick Plachinski, a junior at Cedarburg, was the 200 free champion (1:40.71). Two seniors fought for the diving title, with Neenah’s Draven Feustel coming out on top over Sheboygan North’s Marcel Harris, 421.65 to 412.90.
