Macalester Women, Washington Men Top NCAA Div. III Academic All-America Rankings

PHOENIX, Arizona, April 13. THE women of Macalester College and the men of Washington University topped the NCAA Division III Team Academic All-America Rankings for the Fall 2005-06 semester, according to statistics released by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).

In fact, the Macalester women, coached by Bob Pearson, had the highest team gpa – 3.60 – among all three NCAA divisions, for both women and men. Washington, coached by Brad Shively, had the highest men’s score in the three divisions, 3.49.

In all, 59 Division III women’s teams and 42 men’s teams met the minimum 2.80 team grade point average requirement. Fifty-three women’s teams and 25 men’s teams averaged 3.00 or higher.

WOMEN

In the women’s rankings, Macalester was followed by Pomona-Pitzer College, coached by Brian Guy LeDuc, 3.54; and the College of St. Catherine, coached by Nicole Roberts, 3.47.

Rounding out the top five were: Sweet Briar College, coached by Jason Gallaher, fourth at 3.46; and Whitworth College, coached by Stephen Schadt, fifth at 3.45.

Among the NCAA’s top 10 teams, Emory (3.35) and Washington (3.43) also earned Academic All-America honors.

MEN

In the men’s rankings, #1 Washington was followed by Macalester at 3.45, as Bob Pearson’s teams came within .05 of a point of an unprecedented sweep of both the women’s and men’s rankings.

The third highest men’s team gpa was the 3.41 recorded by coach Brian Guy LeDuc’s Pomona-Pitzer squad. Emory, coached by Jon Howell, was fourth with a score of 3.36; fifth went to the University of St. Thomas, coached by Thomas Hodgson, with a 3.32.

Among the NCAA’s top 10 men’s teams, Emory (3.36) and Tufts (3.27) also earned Academic All-America honors
