Loyola H20unds Invitational

BALTIMORE, Maryland, December 6. THE Blue Hens won seven of the nine relay events, while Hans Gillan broke his own butterfly record as the University of Delaware swim teams completed an impressive showing in the two-day Loyola H2Ounds Invitational at the Mangione Aquatic Center on Saturday.

The Delaware men swept Loyola, Marist, and Villanova, while the women defeated Marist but fell to host Loyola.

For the third straight meet, Gillan broke Delaware's record in the 100-yard butterfly after cruising to a time of 50.18. His showing shaved .09 seconds off his own mark that he set in the Blue Hens' tri-meet against LaSalle and Rider.

Gillan, who also won the 100-freestyle in 46.35, teamed with John Ohlhaver, and Grady Carter to dominate three relay events. In the 200-freestyle, the three standouts joined Zach Schiavo to post a victorious time of 1:23.45. Then, with Ross Buckwalter filling Schiavo's leg, the foursome won the 200-medley relay in 1:33.50.

Later, the three teamed with Robert MacLeish to win the 400-freestyle in 3:06.10.

During Friday's first session, Carter also captured the 50-yard freestyle in 20.66, marking a season-best performance by the sensational sophomore. Craig Young also won the 200-backstroke in 1:54.71, while freshman Josh Hyman took the 400-IM in 4:10.81.

On the women's side, Cortney Barry won three individual events during the meet, taking both distance freestyles as well as the 200-yard discipline. In the 500-free, she paced the field with a time of 4:59.70, while she led all participants in the 1,650 after finishing in 17:17.76. During the 200-yard free, Barry captured the crown in 1:55.39.

Similar to the men, the Delaware women also had a strong showing in the relays as the team took the 200- and 400-medley events as well as the 200- and 800-freestyles. During the 200-medley, Emily Smathers, Kellie Pastore, Elise Kanegawa, and Erinne Butler won in 1:49.87, while Smathers, Pastore, and Kanegawa joined with Maryann Walker to win the 400- in 3:56.69. Walker, who also won the 200-backstroke, then returned to anchor the 200-freestyle team, joining with Butler, Anne Frigo, and Donna Healy, to finish with a time of 1:38.56.

Walker, Barry, Healy, and Kristen McBrien also led the 800-freestyle squad to a victory after finishing in 7:45.52.

On an individual side, the squad posted a clean sweep in both the 100- and 200-breaststroke events. Kellie Pastore took the top spot in each, winning the first event in 1:06.46 before taking the second in 2:22.84. Meghan Barber also finished second in the 100 and third in the 200, while Marianne Flynn was the runner-up in the 200 and Hannah Facchine took third in the 100.

Lauren Guntner, who finished second to Barry in the 1,650-freestyle, won the 400-yard IM earlier in the meet with a clocking of 4:33.39. Elise Kanegawa also took the 100-butterfly in 58.20, Erinne Butler captured the 50-yard freestyle in 24.52, and Shannon Burke won the 1-Meter Board with a score of 220.00.
