For the 20th time in 21 years, the Loyola Blakefield Dons won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference Championship.

Loyola Blakefield scored 505 points at the meet. McDonogh School was second with 375 and Clavert Hall College was third with 346.

The Dons won two of the three relays at the met. Backstroker Will Pelton, breaststroker Ben Brown, butterflier Ben Shropshire and freestyler Matt Clark posted a time of 1:36.43 in the 200-yard medley relay, winning the race by just one-hundredth of a second over Calvert Hall.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay event, McDonogh got the best of Loyola Blakefield. The McDonogh team of James Shiels, Ben Selnick, Derek Nguyen and Matthew McGoey touched in 1:27.62 to win the race.

The last relay of the day was the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Dons won easily, beating Calvert Hall by nearly two seconds. The Loyola team consisted of Sammy Logue, Teddy Turrall, Clark and Brown. They posted a time of 3:10.62.

A number of Loyola Blakefield swimmers picked up two individual wins on the day. Brown won the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.87) and 500-yard freestyle (4:37.38).

Logue won the sprint events. He took the 50- (20.81) and 100-yard freestyle (46.24).

Pelton, only a freshman, earned wins in the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.80) and 100-yard backstroke (51.54).

This was the Dons first year under head coach Matt McDonough. Loyola Blakefield had been led by Keith Schertle for the past 20 years.

“I didn’t know what to expect when I came to Loyola,” McDonough said to the Baltimore Sun. “I am lucky to be able to build on what Keith and the school have done.”
