Louisville vs. Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, January 28. INDIANA won 14 of 16 events, led by three individual victories from Allysa Vavra and a diving sweep from Laura Ryan, in a 165-128 win over the Louisville Cardinals Saturday afternoon at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

With Indiana leading by .14 after the butterfly, Margaux Farrell brought the Hoosiers home on the freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay as Allie Day, Ashley Specht and Justine Ress joined in for a time of 1:42.56, an NCAA B cut.

Lindsay Vrooman led from start to finish in the 1,000 freestyle, taking the win in 9:51.49, a season best. Courey Schaefer was second in 10:03.21 (season best), with Nikki White fourth (10:09.23).

Farrell and Brittney Strumbel went 1-2 in the 200 free, with Farrell touching in 1:48.49, followed by Strumbel in 1:48.94. Lauren Jordan was fifth in 1:51.78.

Day made it four-straight wins for the Hoosiers with a time of 55.54 in the 100 backstroke. Taylor Wohrley was second (56.15) and Ress fourth (56.72).

Bronwyn Pasloski was the fourth individual winner of the day for IU, cruising to a 1:02.86 in the 100 breaststroke, an NCAA provisional time. Specht was second (1:03.47) and Afton Robertson sixth (1:05.18).

Allysa Vavra went a career best in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:58.05 for the win. That is also an NCAA B cut. Brenna MacLean was fourth (2:03.21) and Vrooman fifth (2:03.54).

Farrell continued the Hoosiers' win streak, picking up her second individual title of the day with a 23.53 in the 50 freestyle. Guinevere Vanden Noort was sixth (24.46) and Nikki White seventh (24.97).

Strumbel won the 100 freestyle in 50.98, with Schaefer second (52.17). Ress took the win in the 200 backstroke (2:00.57) followed by Day in second (2:01.15) and Lauren Jordan third (2:01.55).

The Hoosiers went 1-2-3 in the 1-meter springboard event with Laura Ryan posting the winning score of 312.45. Gabby Agostino was second (307.28) and Kate Hillman third (305.78).

Vavra pulled away on the final stroke for her second win of the day, tallying a 2:14.02 in the 200 breaststroke, an NCAA B cut. Pasloski was fourth, also posting an NCAA provisional time (2:15.61).

It was a race between Vrooman and Strumbel for the 500 freestyle victory, with Vrooman taking the win in 4:50.92, followed by Strumbel in 4:51.11. Schaefer was third with a time of 4:56.73.

Day took second in the 100 butterfly (56.42), while Kim Tracey was fifth (56.81). It was no contest for Vavra in the 400 individual medley as she ran away with the victory in 4:12.25, an NCAA B cut. Dorina Szekeres was third (4:24.82) and Tracey sixth (4:27.66).

Ryan made it a sweep of the diving events, taking the 3-meter springboard with 339.30 points. Agostino finished third (328.13) and Hillman fourth (322.43).

Farrell, Ress, Vanden Noort and Strumbel closed the day with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, clocking in at 1:35.20.

Indiana swept in the diving well and dominated the distance events but it was not enough against the Louisville Cardinals, falling short 165.5-134.5 in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

Opening the day with the 200-yard medley relay, James Wells, Cody Miller, Steve Schmuhl and Daniel Kanorr combined for a time of 1:30.06, finishing second.

Andrew Taylor swam away from the field in the 1,000 free with a season-best time of 9:20.21. That led a 1-2-3-4 sweep for IU with Patrick Scally second (9:25.67), Ryan Downey third (9:27.47-season best) and Alex Kotliarsky fourth (9:29.32).

Jim Barbiere tied with Louisville's Alex Burtch for second in the 200 freestyle as both tallied a 1:38.79. John Schnittker was fifth (1:40.81) and Matt Gerth sixth (1:40.97).

In a tight 100-yard backstroke race, Wells was out-touched by Louisville's Brendon Andrews, taking second in 48.55 (NCAA B cut) to Andrews' 48.43. Daniel Kanorr was fourth (51.88).

Miller was the top Hoosier in the 100 breaststroke, finishing fifth in 57.20. Mike Hurley was sixth in 57.42 (season best), and Tony Martir seventh (58.63).

Schmuhl and Tyler Shedron went 2-3 in the 200 butterfly as Schmuhl posted a time of 1:49.28, with a 1:49.71 from Shedron. Sam Trahin was just behind in fourth place (1:52.02).

Kanorr gave IU its second individual win of the day with a 20.44 in the 50 freestyle. Gerth was sixth in 21.75. Barbiere took fourth in the 100 free (45.74), with Gerth fifth (46.33) and Hurley seventh (46.94).

It was all Indiana in the 3-meter springboard competition with Hoosiers taking the top eight spots. Zac Nees was the winner with 397.80, followed by Darian Schmidt in second (366.98) and Bryce Odgen third (360.83). Rounding out the top five were Casey Johnson (358.65) and Mick Dell'Orco (356.25).

Wells finished third in the 200 backstroke (1:50.51), with Adam Twer fourth (1:54.81) and Schmuhl fifth (1:55.96). Trahin led the Hoosiers in the 200 breaststroke with a third-place showing (2:04.63), while Miller was sixth (2:06.24).

Schnittker gave IU the win in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:29.61. The Hoosier sweep was followed by Barbiere in second (4:32.15) and Taylor in third (4:33.02). Kotliarsky took fourth in 4:35.75.

Shedron was edged out in the 100 butterfly, taking second in 50.00. Schmuhl was fourth in 50.75, and Joe Powell sixth (51.78). Trahin added another victory for the Hoosiers with a time of 3:56.49 in the 400 individual medley. Shedron was fourth (4:01.81).

Nees was 2-for-2 on the day with a winning score of 368.33 on the 1-meter. Dell'Orco was second (333.68) and Schmidt third (324.45).

The meet concluded with the 200 freestyle relay as Kanorr, Barbiere, Miller and Wells were second in a time of 1:21.40.
