Longhorn’s Sean Foley Awarded Postgraduate Scholarship

AUSTIN, Tex, June 23. SEAN Foley (Brookfield, Wis.), a senior on the 2002-03 University of Texas men's swim team, has been awarded a postgraduate scholarship from the Big 12 Conference for his success in the pool as well as in the classroom.

The Brookfield, Wis. native is one of 24 athletes to earn a postgraduate scholarship worth $5,000 each by the Big 12 Conference for the 2002-03 academic year.

A committee of three faculty athletics representatives, one senior woman administrator and one director of athletics form the selection group for the postgraduate scholarship awards, which help student-athletes continue their formal education. Criteria for these awards include a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the scholar-athlete's respective institution and completion of athletic eligibility. The scholar-athlete must graduate from his or her member institution within 15 months of selection as postgraduate scholarship recipients are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years after graduation.

Foley, a first-team Academic All-Big 12 Conference selection in 2003, helped lead Texas to a runner-up finish at last year's NCAA Championships in Austin. A member of three national championship teams, the Economics major earned his first NCAA All-America honor at the national meet by competing on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed sixth with a time of 1:18.78. Foley also competed in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly at the NCAA Championships.

On the conference level, Foley helped Texas claim its seventh consecutive Big 12 Conference Championship and 24th consecutive league title overall. A four-time All-Big 12 Conference selection, Foley placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, fifth in the 100-yard butterfly and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle at the 2003 Big 12 Conference Championships.
