Long Course Sectional Highlights Through July 25 – Clovis, Calif.

PHOENIX, Ariz – July 28 – NINE locations will host 2004 Summer SPEEDO Champion Series events across three different weekends. The first six meets have just finished. This note highlights the top efforts at the Western Zone site in Clovis, California. This site invites members of the primarily California based LSCs to participate: Southern California, Pacific, San Diego-Imperial, Sierra Nevada and Central California.

• Central – Wichita, KS – July 21-24
• Eastern – Buffalo, NY – July 22-25
• Southern – Auburn, AL – July 22-25
• – Clovis, CA – July 22-25
• Central – Minneapolis, MN – July 22-25
• Central – Bloomington, IN – July 28-August 1
• Southern – Austin, TX – July 28-August 1
• Western – Federal Way, WA – August 10-14

While there were certainly some fine swims at the venerable Clovis-West High School pool, the meet seemed most memorable simply for how huge the turnout was, with several events having over 150 athletes. It appeared that most of the numerous elite college and post-grad athletes in the state are on their way to Greece, stopped their summer after the Trials or are heading to the ConocoPhillips National Championships. The result was a meet offering placement success to many club swimmers on the way up, some of whom will likely be threats for Beijing in 2008.

Possibly the best swim was the 1:01.51 by Amanda Sims in the 100m butterfly or the :56.57 prelim swim by Danielle Townsend in the 100 freestyle.
