Lezak, Stitts Turn in Fast Times at NOVA Intrasquad Meet

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., October 13. IT came down to the final relay of the meet – the 400 meter freestyle relay – and a 50.48 anchor leg from Olympic Gold Medalist, Jason Lezak to eke out a victory by the NOVA BLUE team over the BLACK team in a Nova intra-squad meet today.

In early season competition between the Novaquatics Blue and Black teams, standout performances were turned in by a number of athletes in the early stages of preparation for next year’s Olympic Trials.

Black team co-captain Staciana Stitts came away with the female performance of the meet with her 1:11.29 in the 100 meter breaststroke. She coupled her victory in the 100 with a win in the 200 meter breaststroke with a time of 2:34.65.

Olympic gold medalist, Jason Lezak swam to the top male performance of the meet with a win in the 50 free, swimming to a time of 23.05 to outpace Joe Novak (24.30) and 1996 Olympic gold medalist Brad Schumacher (24.53).

Other top times were turned in by Colleen Lanne in the 50 meter freestyle (26.83) and Pan American Games gold medalist, Beth Goodwin who touched first in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:01.84.

Gabe Woodward stroked to a victory in the men’s 100 meter freestyle with a time of 51.61 holding off a charging Lezak (52.68) with Luke Anderson taking third with a time of 52.93. In the 200 freestyle, Black team member, Scott Tucker easily took the win with a time of 1:54.16.

In the 100 backstroke, 2003 California State Junior College Swimmer of the Year, Sherry Tsai took the win with a time of 1:05.95 while her male counterpart, newcomer from Brazil, Daniel Novak took the win with a time of 1:00.64, holding off 1999 Pan Am Games bronze medalist, Dani Shevchik who touched in a time of 1:01.06. Shevchik was later disqualified in the 200 backstroke for a turn infraction.

In the men’s 100 breaststroke, 2003 World Championship team member, Dave Denniston came up with the win in a time of 1:05.23 to go along with his win in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.64).

Andrew Livingston also took two wins with his 56.00 and 2:05.67 in the 100 and 200 butterfly, respectively.
