Lehman Adds Women’s Water Polo

BRONX, NY – Lehman College, CUNY, will add women’s water polo to its varsity roster, becoming one of only four colleges in the New York area to offer female students the chance to participate in this varsity sport. During its inaugural season, the team will play a 12-game schedule this spring against other New York teams in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).

With 15 women on the roster, coach Dan Maloney expects each member to immediately contribute to the team’s performance. Maloney, who also coaches the men’s water polo team, credits the success of the women’s swim team at Lehman for building interest in this new venture.

“With more and more women coming out to compete in swimming,” he explains, “the addition of water polo is a natural progression for the growth of sports at Lehman College.” Lehman Athletics Director Martin Zwiren believes that the addition of women’s water polo also “enhances Lehman’s gender-equity position in Division III athletics.”

Maloney expects the team to debut with a home game on the first weekend in March. Its first New York Division tournament is already scheduled for the weekend of March 27-28.
