Lancashire Searching for Fourth Straight Title at Britain’s National County Team Championships

LONDON, October 11. THIS weekend, Lancashire will attempt to wins its fourth consecutive title at the National County Team Championships. The Amateur Swimming Association event features 38 teams from England, Scotland and Wales and will be held at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge. More than 1,100 athletes between the ages of 12 and 17 will take part.

Many of the athletes competing represent the future of British swimming and are threats to earn invitations to the 2012 Olympic Games, scheduled for London. Yorkshire has been the second-place finisher the last two years and will be the prime challenger to Lancashire. Other challenges should come from Northumberland, Durham and Hampshire.

Promising youngsters who will swim include Ellen Gandy (Beckenham), Max Partridge (City of Sheffield), Lizzie Simmonds (Lincoln Vulcans), Gemma Spofforth (Portsmouth Northsea) and Marco Loughran (Guildford City).
