La Salle vs. St. Bonaventure

ST. BONAVENTURE, New York, November 10. THE St. Bonaventure women's swimming and diving team improved to 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play by handling La Salle's swimmers and divers, 174-124, Saturday afternoon at the Reilly Center pool. The men were victorious as well, topping La Salle by a score of 168-130.

Senior Meghan King and junior Allison Whalen were the Bonnies' winning duo on Saturday as both swimmers recorded two wins a piece. King lit up the scoreboard with a time of 25.06 in the 50-yard freestyle and later won the 100-yard freestyle by posting a time of 54.15. Whalen won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:08.22 and finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.18. In the 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Taylor Merena finished just behind Whalen with times of 2:10.07 and 1:00.03, respectively.

Senior Taryn Ahern, senior Anneli Johnson and freshman Kathryne Valentine also contributed wins to the women's team. Ahern touched first with a time of 1:57.24 in the 200-yard freestyle, and Valentine tallied a win in the 200-yard backstroke by finishing with a time of 2:10.08.

After grabbing gold in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.31, Johnson suffered her first loss in any breaststroke event this year. In the 200-yard breaststroke, La Salle sophomore Shannon Duval beat out Johnson for the top spot; Johnson finished second with a time of 2:21.45.

The women continued their season-long success in relay events by winning the 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Valentine, Johnson, Whalen and King swam a time of 3:54.89 in the 400-yard medley relay. The last event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, was won by King, Ahern, junior Kaitlyn Heller and sophomore Allison Smith in 3:39.79.

The Bonnies' sophomore Kara Small also performed well and took silver three times in the day's events. In the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM, Small finished with respective times of 2:11.16, 1:57.59 and 2:13.73.

In diving action, sophomore Gina Hendrickson had a strong showing on the boards. In the one-meter dive, Hendrickson scored 174.75 points, good enough for third. Hendrickson finished second in the three-meter dive when she put up 180.38 points.

With the win against La Salle, the Bona women's season record now stands at 3-4.

The women's swimming and diving team will observe a break in their meet schedule until they welcome Canisius to the Reilly Center on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 11:00 a.m.

Led by 11 first place finishes and strong performances on the boards, the men's swimming and diving team defeated La Salle 168-130 on Saturday at the Reilly Center. Senior Roman Margulis and junior Pat Henahan both won multiple events to help the Bonnies earn their second Atlantic 10 victory of the season.

Henahan won gold in each of his individual events – the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle, posting times of 22.03, 47.59 and 1:45.78, respectively.

Henahan also teamed with Margulis, senior Scott Jordan and freshman Chris Baker to claim the top spot in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:29.21, a season-best time in the event for the Brown and White.

Margulis won both the 100-yard butterfly (52.11) and 200-yard butterfly (1:56.97) while earning silver in the 200-yard IM in a time of 1:58.07.

In diving, the Bonnies earned the top three finishes in both events. Senior CJ Maurer won the three-meter competition with a season-best score of 300.08, followed by juniors Jonathan Larson (274.95) and Ryan Pietrzak (250.13). In one-meter action, all three set season-best times for the event. Pietrzak earned the top spot (273.68), followed by Maurer (242.40) and Larson (238.20).

In the 200-yard backstroke, senior James Wood won with a time of 1:56.49. Wood also set a season-best time for the Bonnies in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:04.33), good enough for third place.

Jordan also set a team season-best time in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.49) to win the event for St. Bonaventure. Sophomore Mariusz Michalik posted a time of 1:00.48 to finish third.

Michalik was the winner of the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.67 and placed third in the 200-yard IM (1:59.56).

In the 100-yard backstroke, Baker finished second with a time of 54.10 to set a team-best time in the event. He also set a personal-best time in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.72) to earn bronze.

Junior Chris Happel touched in second place in the 100-yard butterfly (53.31) behind Margulis.

The Bonnies are now 2-3 on the season and 2-0 in the A-10. St. Bonaventure returns to the pool for the Akron Invite on Friday, November 30 in Akron, Ohio.
