La Jolla, Mt. Carmel Squeak Past Competition at CIF San Diego Section Division Two Championship Meet

SAN DIEGO, California, June 1. LA Jolla and Mt. Carmel both eked out wins over the women's and men's fields, respectively, in the CIF San Diego Section Division Two Championships.

Team Scores
La Jolla topped second-place Mt. Carmel in the women's meet by a score of 216-200.5. Cathedral Catholic came in third with 159 points.

Mt. Carmel's men's team placed first in the team rankings with 178 points. Westview settled for second with 169 points while La Jolla ranked third (146).

Women's Results
Mt. Carmel mined gold in two of the three relay events. The contingent of Jessica Schmidbauer, Christina Webb, Dani Spence and Hayley Ettelson flirted with Rancho Bernardo's record in the 200 freestyle relay and won with a time of 1:39.53. Schmidbauer, Ettelson, Spence and Vanessa Evans teamed up for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay as well (3:34.74).

Gloria Benefield from La Jolla took first place in both of her individual events. Benefield won the 200 freestyle (1:50.81) and the 100 butterfly (56.14).

Ettelson doubled up on the sprint events. She took the gold in the 50 freestyle (23.96) and the 100 freestyle (51.34).

Men's Results
Westview touched first in two of the three relay events. Westview's grouping of Justin Kerr, Ryan Sullivan, Jimmy Zhu and Chris Rancourt won the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:29.50. Sullivan, Rancourt, Zhu and Kerr mustered up a 3:15.53 performance in the 400 freestyle relay at the end of the meet as well.

Kerr won both the 200 and 100 freestyle events. Kerr won the 200 freestyle by a little more than a second with a 1:44.45 time. He touched out Rancourt in the 100 freestyle (48.53), coming back on the back half of the race.

Gari Altamirano from University City snared top honors in the 200 IM (1:58.02) and the 100 butterfly (53.57).

James White of Christian rounded out the double event winners with gold medals in the 500 freestyle (4:44.35) and the 100 breaststroke (1:00.56).

Diving Results
Tessa Barclay from the Academy of Our Lady Peace edged out her teammate, Kristina Beck, with a score of 173.90. Beck settled for the silver with a 172.70 score. Sofia Klar from Ramona took third (153.20).

Tanner Knorr from Valhalla topped the diving field with a first-place score of 221.85. Cody Walwick of Westview placed second (192.55) and Todd Garrison of Hilltop took third (156.25).
